“Very, very moderate hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2009

A Maastricht hotel in the weekends is not cheap, OK. But for € 200,- per night excl. breakfast (!) I would expect a decent hotel. Only good thing about this hotel is their location. I'm regulary staying in hotels around this price level and this was the by far the poorest of all. Dirty walls and carpet, poor bathroom, very noisy (small) room (you hear every door / chair / music in other rooms), no mini-bar and a very small old fashion tv.
Besides this, the hotel lobby was under construction (would have been nice to mention it in advance when we booked). There was not even a sign in front of the hotel (probably due to the contructions), so we passed by 3 times before we noticed the hotel.
We didn't have breakfast because due to the overall hotel experience I didn't know what to expect from that anymore. Staff was friendly, but I think not very experienced.

This hotel is worth € 115,- p.r.p.n incl. breakfast at most.

“Reasonable hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2009

I stayed at the Hotel Le Roi with a friend last weekend. The location is excellent when you travel by train (you only have to cross the street to get there) and you can walk to the city centre in about ten minutes. The rooms are pretty big, but the carpet is dirty and the bathrom is very dated. No blow-dryer in the bathroom. Because the doors to the room are so heavy, you constantly hear doors slamming shut, especially at night and in the morning. The breakfast is very good, with a selection of fruit, bread, juices and spreads. We had a discounted stay and paid 42 euros per person per night, but I would not have paid anything more.

“Adequate”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 September 2008

Booking a hotel in Maastricht is notoriously difficult and this place was last on our list. The room was large, as was the bathroom. However, the carpet was filthy, both in our room and through out the hotel. Breakfast was simple but pleasant. It was good value as hotels in Maastricht can be very expensive, especially at the weekend.

“Good hotel, OK location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2007

We only stayed in this hotel one night, because they were booked for our second night, so we switched to Hotel Beaumont (see other review). Comparing the two hotels, HB is a step up and a little nicer, also with a better location, but Le Roi is not a bad choice.

About the hotel:
The staff at reception were very friendly when we checked in, and because we had been told Hotel Beaumont didnt have parking (we never actually confirmed that), we also asked if we could keep our car in their garage an extra night that we were in town. Was no problem and cost us 15 euros/day to park (unlimited in/out privileges). We opted out of breakfast because it was 16 euros/person.

The lobby is funky with a modern type feel. The building doesnt have the best architecture (low ceilings, terrible dorm-esk stairwells, etc), but you can tell the hotel did a great job designing and making it nice and comfortable.

The rooms were extra large and clean, although the rug could stand to be replaced (had some bad stains that you knew had been cleaned, but would never come out) and a full size bathroom with a tub/shower. The bed was very comfortable (although it was the typical european twins pushed together, so there is 'the crack') and had a fun canopy that sort of draped above it. There was a small balcony off the room, but nothing I would want to stand out on for long periods of time- was narrow, with no chairs, etc.

The one minor drawback to the hotel stay, was that it was a bit noisy from the road. The hotel is right across the street from the train tracks/station, although you dont really notice that. But because of such, its on a very main road that has traffic at all hours and even though we had the windows shut, the sound came through. We're heavy sleepers, so didnt bother us much, but it definitely would cause problems for a light sleeper.

Location was OK, esp good for getting to/from the train station, but a longer walk to the 'old town' (maybe 10 blocks?) than from Hotel Beaumont. But still very reasonable.

Overall, I wouldn't mind staying here again, but would prefer somewhere else if possible. If you can get this hotel at a great rate, I would definitely go for it.
