Most Americans do not stay in 2 star properties, so many of the negatives associated with this hotel are not necessarily bad; they just reflect the limited service and amenities available at a property at that level. When one of us would complain about something, the other would say, "But remember, this is a 2 star hotel!"
My wife and I (mid 40's in age) stayed 9-10 Feb, 2007, which was just before Carnival. The location of this hotel is fantastic since it is in the center of Maastricht within walking distance of everything. On the other hand, the central location can be a detriment at 2 AM Sunday morning when the roaming band marches through the bar downstairs as part of the pre-Carnival activities. There can also be a fair amount of noise from the Markt Square, so you may prefer a room in the back of the building.
The room was very basic and the bathroom door was an accordian screen which might be used as a cheap closet door (But remember, this is a 2 star hotel). The TV had a good selection of channels but the room had no phone and there was no pay phone in the hotel (Cell phones reign in Europe also). Breakfast was OK but not outstanding (But remember...) and it was nice not having to leave the property for it. The elevator was nice and modern, but it was permeated by a sewage smell which also wafted into some of the halllways (But remember...). Hopefully, this is a temporary problem.
The bedding and towels were adequate. The bar downstairs, which also serves as reception was OK but smoky and there is a separate entrance accessed by an electronic relay chip attached to your room key.
I had a rental car which I parked at Magdendries public lot about 5 blocks away for 5 euros/day. There were underground lots which were marginally closer for 19 euros/day. There is a cinema called Lumiere on Bogaardstraat 40 located in an old church about 5 blocks from the hotel; most of the movies are in English with Dutch subtitles.
All in all, this is an adequate hotel in the center of a great city. All hotels there are expensive for us because of the weakness of the US dollar. I would highly encourage you to visit Maastricht--it's like Amsterdam without the bums and trash. If you choose to stay in this hotel, remember that is is a 2 star hotel!
