“Not far from Aachen”

Vaals is a small town in Holland, nestled in that border spot for Germany, Belgium and Holland. It is actually just a few minutes from Aachen in Germany.
We stayed at the Dolce Kasteel (castle/chateau) Vaalsbroek for one night in November. You don't stay in the Kasteel but there seemed to be rooms and a restaurant there. The hotel complex is quite new and based around the Kasteel. It seems to cater mainly for conferences but there was plenty of private visitors like us.
The rooms are nicely appointed and quite big, ours looked out over a nice babling brook which was quite pleasant. The whole property looks very nice and is situated in the countryside about 5 minutes drive out of the town.

  • Liked — The room and country setting
  • Disliked — Not being able to eat at the restaurant as it was booked out.
  • Tips/Secrets — Book restaurant before going and make sure you following the map or you will go around in circles.

“Should be 5**** listed*”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2006

Stayed with large group attending the Equestrian Games. Its postion and accessability ensured minimum travel time to and from the games. Service was better than 5**** in London. All local staff keen to help at every stage. Food and service was swift and with no fuss. I would recommend this venue to any corporate group looking for relaxation. Reception staff doubling up as Concierge worked well. Down side was having no time to enjoy the surrounding countryside and sporting pursuits, maybe next time.............

  • Liked — Location, quiet, good spa treatments and overall freindly swift service
  • Disliked — Availability of large suites
  • Tips/Secrets — Make full use of the surrounding countryside

“Lovely Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2006

We stayed in the Kasteel Vaalsbroek for 1 week in August during the world equestrian games. From the moment we arrived we found the staff to be both proffessional and accomodating. We drink our tea with milk so they happily sent us some as soon as we asked and generally provided excellent information for the games.

We found the Spa facility to be a real bonus and used the pool, sauna and gym every night - but be prepared to see naked Germans in the sauna!! The facilitys were in excellent condition and to a high standard and I particularly liked the many different cold showers you could have after your sauna.

Breakfast was amazing with a huge choice - even the fussiest eater will find something they like.

We ate in the bar one night and although a little expensive for bar food it was of restaurant quality.

I must recomend Murphys restaurant which is signed outside the hotel and situated just up the road. We found the food to be exceptionally good and very reasonably priced, and the staff were very good with us too as we only spoke English and the menu was in Dutch!

All in all a good stay and we will all definately return.

“A lot of air for a lot of money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2006

The accomodation consists of the old castle, a tavern, a modern building with rooms and a lack. It is situated outside Vaals and is reachable by car. There is also a small swimmingpool, 2 sauna's and 8 lazy chairs which is much too little for 130 rooms. The fitness area is strange enough only reachable through the swimmingpool area which is time-consuming. The prices of consumations and food are very expensive for Flemish standards. There is no hotel animation so you have to animate yourself (walking, cycling, relaxing). Most of the staff is friendly or artificial friendly. The organisation was not all the time spotless.

We booked in june 2006 a beauty-dreampackage for 2 persons and 2 days that costed us €500 (extra's included). Unfortunately like most people we didn't sleep and eat in the castle which is more for parties and if you are lucky a castle dinner.

The package includes a junior suite (number 364) which is fantastic, very big, very luxuary, hygienical, silent and really recommandable. There where 2 tv sets (in contact with hotel computer for messages and bill), a sofa, a bureau, 2 lazy chairs, free safe, minibar, a small terrace, internet, bathroom with bath and seperate toilet, free instant coffee and tea. My intuition tells me that the standard rooms are quite a lot less quality and noisier.

The included 4 course dinner with matching wines will probably be culinary for most Dutch people but is really one size too small for us gastronomic Flemish people. It is rather ennobled tavern food which you can eat every where in Antwerp for far less money. The wines didn't satisfy and with each course you got only one half glass without a refill. The enjoyable house aperitif and average coffee were an extra cost of €14. Also the light lunch the second day was of average quality. The breakfast buffet on the other hand was extended, enjoyable and correctly for a 4*hotel.

Also included is a facial threathment for her and a body massage for him which lasted an hour. Both threatments are of high quality and relaxing. Other threatments can be booked against payment and are rather expensive.

Our conclusion is that we payed a lot of money for 2 days. We don't make a problem of spending it but than we want quality for our money and we don't have the right feeling with that. We think that we payed also for the high standard of the resort. So we do not think we will book here again.

“Nice hotel, great setting, nothing flash”

Stayed here for a conference and brought the family too - had a nice suite that had ample room for all and they could provide English-speaking babysitters. The formal restaurant is a bit staid and lacks atmosphere but the bar is good, if cosy, and serves good snack meals. The surrounding area is not very interesting for isghtseeing unless you like country walks and bike rides (You can hire bikes from the hotel). There is ahowever good indoor play facility nearby. It rained all the time (in June) which I think is normal as the hotel provides umbrellas to get from building to building. Small pool and spa are are fine. Friendly, clean and good value if you ge the right deal. 3-4* I'd say.
