We went to a concert in Maastricht and stayed over at the Bastion Hotel for 1 night. It is rated as a four star hotel but the satndard is not closely related to a South African four star hotel. To my knowledge it could be rated as a two star hotel only.

My work colleagues and I had a very good stay at the Bastion. By American standards, the rooms may be small -- but by European standards, they are average. The bathroom is actually quite roomy, and everything was very clean. The room is no-frills (the closets don't have doors and are really just small wardrobes), but there is an AC unit -- you just need to know how to use your room key to start it up.

The staff members at the front desk are always friendly and helpful. Breakfast is excellent, with standard options of meats, cheeses, breads, fruit, yogurt, cereal, plus bacon and eggs cooked to order.

The location is just a short walk from the central squares in town, and easy to get to if you have a car.

I can't speak to the rooms with windows overlooking the street, but the rooms that look over the central area are very quiet.

I don't know. Maybe they have improved over the past year. But I had a different reaction from many of the other reviewers. No, it's not a true luxury hotel. But that 100 euro price should have tipped off the complainers that it's not luxury. I guess "Deluxe" is a relative term. I'd call it a good, solid choice, far better than more expensive hotels on the other side of the river. My room was clean, air-conditioned, and offered free wireless internet which worked fine. The only real thing bad about the room was that it lacks adequate lighting, but then I have found that to be a common problem in European hotels.

The staff seemed to me to be friendly, knowledgeable about the city and helpful. Yes, the breakfast may have been a little over-priced, but isn't that the case with most hotels?They offer a good range of hot and cold dishes and will cook eggs to order if you can't handle scrambled. And hot breads will cover a lot of flaws!

The location is great: maybe 150 meters to the town hall and market square. If you don't like the restaurant choices there, walk another 100 meters to (I think) Keizer Karelsplein. There are two beautiful churches to admire and another dozen restaurants.
