“Be Cautious”

I stayed at this hotel for a week on a business trip in June of 2007. The entrance, lobby and restaurant were pleasing but the rooms were sub par. The hotel touts itself as providing luxurious 4 star accomodations. This is far from the truth. Maybe in the 80's this was a 4 star hotel but not today. The rooms were dingy and outdated.

The worst part of my stay was receiving my bill. This hotel double-charged my credit card and refused to rectify the situation.

It has taken me three months and numerous emails to the Best Western Corporate Office in order to get this fixed.

My advice….Don’t stay at this hotel unless you have to. Better yet….stay in Maastricht

“Possibly the worst hotel in Western Europe”

Anybody who has ever been to Heerlen will know that good hotels are a little thin on the ground to say the least. This one does nothing to raise the standard. In fact I can absolutely say it is dreadful!

If you are coming to Heerlen for god's sake stay at one of the valk.com ones e.g. the Kasteel TerWorm which is very little more money but a world apart in terms of quality (see my review of it).

How the 'Grand' hotel ever earned 4 stars I will never know.

It is one of these monsterous 60's concrete blocks, in the middle of many more concrete blocks (like a high rise housing estate) which has more recently been dressed up, at little expense, with roman statues and chandeliers. Just awful.

The staff are poorly trained and inept.

The bar uncomfortable and tired.

The place appeared so dirty that I didn't dare eat dinner in their restaurant and went hungry instead (however see comments regarding breakfast below).

The lifts appeared to be held together with Duck tape and the bedroom had clearly not been decorated since the building was built on the 60's. It was old, dirty and smelled of mould - apart from the toilet which smelt like a Spanish hotel in Benidorm 30 years ago - quite disgusting.

The duvet, which I can liken to a damp sack encased by an old tea towel adorned an ancient mattress, like a trampolene, which made me feerful of bedbugs all night.

Heating didn't work properly either by the way.

As soon as I arrived I started to look for another hotel and checked out next morning.

... not before having breakfast however which was utterly atrocious. I have never had sweet scrambled eggs before - is that a Dutch custom? Presumably the kitchen got their sugar mixed up with their salt? The pastry was stale (probably left out from the night before), the coffee smelt like the bathroom (see above) and the choice of anything to substitute this meagre offering was not attractive.

DO NOT STAY HERE! IT SHOULD BE CONDEMNED.

“good, no thrills”

Stayed at the Grand Hotel Best Western for two nights during the „Sinterklaas“ period (around 5 Dec) in 2005 to do the annual Santa Claus shopping in the South of the Netherlands. We booked the hotel on the internet on a special offer for a double room for 119 Euro. The lobby was quite large and pleasantly furnished and decorated (autumn theme). Reception was friendly. In contrast, the lift was very small, could hardly contain two persons and luggage and a sense of claustrophobia surfaced. The room was a bit dark but clean, nothing special to be mentioned here.
The breakfast aired the typical Calvinistical soberness the Dutch are soooo used to, not too much, not too little, no exaggeration, sufficient choice of cheese, eggs, tea, coffee etc, but I’m sure it might scare international guests away who might think that they are not getting value for their money.
We dined in the pleasantly decorated dining room one of the nights and enjoyed the food. The kitchen seemed to be a strong point. Excellent choice of wines.

We certainly will check offers for this hotel on the internet when we plan to go to Heerlen again.

“Would not stay there again”

The lobby is inviting and nice, you think the rooms would be equally nice, but they are not. We were disappointed with the 1st room, saw another, equally depressingthey said the rooms are all the same so we settled into the 2nd. The rooms were dark, dingy & drab, definitely not from this time era. The bath had black mold along the edge, no wash rags ever supplied, mini bar was completely empty. We told the staff that all the bulbs in their parking lot were burned out; the bulbs were not replaced in the 5 days we were there. Breakfast, Euro 13.30, is a joke and was the exact same powdered eggs every day. They did have some decent chocolate croissants. The staff for the most part was friendly and helpful & the bar was decent, but did not make up for the unpleasantness of the room. The location was a 3 minute walk to a circle of restaurants that were mostly closed, 10 minutes from a main walking street of restaurants and shops. Most places were closed as it was October and cold.
