Anybody who has ever been to Heerlen will know that good hotels are a little thin on the ground to say the least. This one does nothing to raise the standard. In fact I can absolutely say it is dreadful!
If you are coming to Heerlen for god's sake stay at one of the valk.com ones e.g. the Kasteel TerWorm which is very little more money but a world apart in terms of quality (see my review of it).
How the 'Grand' hotel ever earned 4 stars I will never know.
It is one of these monsterous 60's concrete blocks, in the middle of many more concrete blocks (like a high rise housing estate) which has more recently been dressed up, at little expense, with roman statues and chandeliers. Just awful.
The staff are poorly trained and inept.
The bar uncomfortable and tired.
The place appeared so dirty that I didn't dare eat dinner in their restaurant and went hungry instead (however see comments regarding breakfast below).
The lifts appeared to be held together with Duck tape and the bedroom had clearly not been decorated since the building was built on the 60's. It was old, dirty and smelled of mould - apart from the toilet which smelt like a Spanish hotel in Benidorm 30 years ago - quite disgusting.
The duvet, which I can liken to a damp sack encased by an old tea towel adorned an ancient mattress, like a trampolene, which made me feerful of bedbugs all night.
Heating didn't work properly either by the way.
As soon as I arrived I started to look for another hotel and checked out next morning.
... not before having breakfast however which was utterly atrocious. I have never had sweet scrambled eggs before - is that a Dutch custom? Presumably the kitchen got their sugar mixed up with their salt? The pastry was stale (probably left out from the night before), the coffee smelt like the bathroom (see above) and the choice of anything to substitute this meagre offering was not attractive.
DO NOT STAY HERE! IT SHOULD BE CONDEMNED.
