“When in Groningen. stay here at least 1 night”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

You enter through the restaurant and find out that the bar is the reception. You feel being in a Dutch pub or English Inn and are welcomed by friendly and hospitable staff. The owners have been gifted, being able to turn this monument into modern hotel that did not loose its historical identity. We are in Groningen and for the Dutch this is the middle of nowhere, a cold empty spot on the map. The heart beat is provided by the old Universtity with a worldly reputation and this hotel just fits in this atmosphere. Around the corner is the old inner city of Groningen and young people and good looking people are here dominating the cosy streets, shops and restaurants. The hotel blends very well in and if there was anything which should be changed: serve also a few good hot plates for lunch and explain your guests how to operate the fancy showers; my spouse and I felt ....... that we had to think and try for 5 minutes how to gt water out the tap. But nothing wrong with water power and temperature.
For your reference: we are familiar wth hotels in a completely differnt price range, between Euro 200-400, and also reviewed a few of these negatively. This hotel offers value for money.

“Historic building -needs some ghosts”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

The best feature of the hotel is the ever helpful staff, always willing to expedite requests promptly.
The building itself is an historic army guard house given that in mind the rooms have been renovated to the point were they are spacious and comfortable
The windows could do with some double-glazing investment as the noise from the street is loud
They compensate for this with complimentary earplugs but personally I’d prefer double glazing….
As for the room, the bathroom is commodious and decent but without a shower door the floor gets a wet.
The extraction vent inside failed to work but there was no sign of mould yet.
The aircon didn’t seem to operate when I tested it but the radiators’ did come on in the morning.
The sofa in the room is simply too uncomfortable to sit on to watch TV and the plastic desk chair about the same.
The internet was free but kept dropping out to the point I would have complained if I would have paid for this service.

Breakfast is a continental affair which was fine for me with prompt service

“A pleasant stay in Groningen”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

Recently we stayed at the hotel. We had the "balkenkamer". The room itself wasn't that impressive, but is was oke. The staff is very helpfull and polite. Breakfast is lovely with very tasty bread and buns.

“Great Boutique Hotel in the Center of Groningen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011

Although we only stayed one night, it was a charming visit. The room was spacious and beautifully renovated. The staff was extremely friendly. The buffet breakfast (€ 14,50 pp) was lovely with a large variety of local breads, cheeses, meats, yogurt, fruits and made-to-order bacon and eggs. The location couldn't be more convenient for walking to the busy center of town and the wonderful Groningen Museum. We found ample unpaid parking a 5-mintue walk away (over the canal). We were concerned when we saw the complimentary ear plugs, but our room (#11) was in the back, so we were not disturbed by the lively Saturday night student crowds. Our room also had a balcony with chairs. Had we stayed longer it would have been nice to sit with a glass of wine and watch the sun set over the city. The breakfast room/bar is extremely homey with lovely lighting and book shelves filled with anything and everything you would want to read. They also provide daily newspapers and a chess board. There is only one, very tiny, thing I would change and that is there should be a hair dryer provided in each bathroom. Then it would be perfect!!!! Great stay for your money!!!!!

Corps de Garde is a Boutique Hotel located in the city center of Groningen. Rooms (including bathroom) are very spacious, very elegantly decorated, and comfortable. Staff is very friendly and professional. I particularly liked the modern and unique design of the room.
