“If you can avoid it. Stay in the other NH hotel”

I usually like NH hotels, but not this one. I did not know there were two NH hotels in Groningen, for such a small city (around 200,000 people), that seems a lot. The other NH hotel (called De ville) was great and I loved it. Hence the mistake when I asked for the NH hotel again.
So don't mix them up, because there are a lot of differences.
This hotel is located a bit outside of the city center and I did not feel secure going there by foot.
From outside, the hotel did not appear particularly great.
The room itself was basic; a bed, a desk, an armchair, neither big or small. The backroom was ok, but there was not the nice bath set I had had in the other hotel (bath products, sponge, comb, etc...).
Internet wireless worked well but was not included in the price.

“Well located and good value”

Good room, standard fare at this level. No fridge or mini-bar, which was a minor nuisance. However the proximity to the town square and great restaurants and cafes makes it pretty redundant anyway, and there is a supermarket in the ground floor of the medical centre opposite.

As others no doubt say, the hospital brings with it the occassional helicopter - you can choose to be annoyed or interested.

Bar staff were friendly enough when they realised there were customers at non-meal times. Clearly they aren't desperate for tips. The restaurant gave a decent meal; breakfast in particular catered for all requirements.

Car parking is avaialble in the medical centre carpark across the road. An odd arrangement but it works. Ask at reception for a voucher.

My only problem was that as a non-smoker I was "dismayed" to find no non-smoking rooms were available. First time in Europe - who would have thought smokers were still accommodated? :) I should have specified it when booking, so can't really lame the hotel for that. Anyway the reason became clear when several national womens' sports teams took up the non-smoking floors. The scenery made up for the smoking room.

“good value, good location”

the hotel is situated oposite the main entrance to the academic hospital, which gives some extra noise levels as the ambulances and or helicopters come and go. though this might seem a put off, the advatages - goodparking facility and some late shopping faciclities more than outweight this. the hotel has two type of rooms. the standard rooms are more than adequate and quite affordable. coffee and tea making in the room. the city centre is less than a 5 minutes walk, `with some nice restaurants and pubs down the road. the staff is helpfull and friendly.

Room Tip: ask for room 910 best corner room on highest floor with nice view

“location does it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2011

The location of this hotel is great; only a few minutes walk from the city center; about 20 minutes walk from the central station, and next to the academic hospital. Our standard room was a bit small (adjacent to the elevator shaft), and very basic. Not quite 4 star, I would say. It seems there are also renovated and bigger rooms (superior). Nevertheless, our room was located at the 9th floor, and the view was excellent. We had no trouble with noise from the elevator or other rooms. Bathroom was also pretty basic: no bath, shower only, but everything was very clean. Breakfast was not included in the price, and too expensive. Staff was friendly. The hotel doesn't have much other facilities but a restaurant and a bar. Wifi is not free. I would stay in this hotel again because of the comfort and the location.

Room Tip: a room with a view!

“Convenient location for the business traveler”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2011

I stayed here in January 2011. The hotel is located in front of the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG), 5 minutes walk from the city centre, and about a 15 minute walk from the railway station.
Check-in and check-out was efficient. The hotel reception area is somewhat impersonal, the bar was closed (too) early. My room was a large corner room, not luxurious but with everything you need. Good desk to work. Nice view over the city. Excellent breakfast. Value for money price (EUR 90 including breakfast).
