“good characterful hotel in a central location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

I stayed here several times for work in 2009-2010. The staff were always friendly and as other reviewers have noted, the fresh bread at breakfast was one of the highlights. Always clean, there was plenty of hot water, and even during an especially cold trip (-8C one January) the heating was good.
My main gripes were:
1. the beds that were all rather old and saggy - not too uncomfortable, but definitely time for an upgrade (which may have been done by now)
2. the very very steep stairs to the upper floors in the back building (which are not unusual in the Netherlands).
Otherwise the shabby chic was rather charming and I enjoyed staying there. There were a couple of computers available for general use in the lounge area.
I was treated to a meal in the French restaurant which was excellent if expensive, and ate a couple of times in the Greek taverna downstairs (less good but fine).

“Good hospitality, spotless room, ...and fresh bread from the bakery!”

I stayed in a double room (room No.40) for 2 nights with my husband. It was very close to the parking, of which they give you a discount ticket for 24 hours (so then it will be 16 euro). The reception is open for 24 hours, and there are nice but affordable restaurant, a patisserie, and a bar in the building. Our room was at the very corner of the anex, and it was very noisy in the night on Thursday. There was a horrible music with heaby base sound plus young students screaming and yelling till 3 am.. this was only the bad experience staying in that room, but for the rest it was perfect. The room offers new towels everyday, and amenities are checked and refreshed. The breakfast is 7-10am (8-11am on Sat+Sunday), where you can enjoy a sorts of fresh bread that they bake themselves with honey and jams, along with cheese, hams, scrumbled or boiled eggs, bacons, corn frakes, lettuce, tomato, yoghrut, orange juice, and crackers and so on. The staff was very helpful, and we enjoyed our stay very much. We would certainly come back to this place - only would stay in a bit more sheltered room though.

“Be aware of the difference between the standard rooms and the deluxe..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

Good location, nice old-style interior. However sometimes missing 'the touch'.
Beware of the difference in rooms. Room 1 to 12 are in the reception area, and in particular room 4 (bruidal suite) is gorgeous with high ceilings, chandeliers and a 2x2m jacuzzi. However, filling the jacuzzi takes about 1 hour since the water is not that fast. And the other option of showering is in the jacuzzi with a rain shower - where it is impossible to figure out how to adjust the temperature.
Restaurant (last time: good quality) was closed although it should be open (holiday season?), bistro menu had only 3 main courses of which 1 was not available. We tried the other 2 - total disappointment.

Room Tip: Opt for the Deluxe rooms, the standard rooms are outside, smelly, too old. Room 4 is gorgeous.

“Great staff, great breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

We booked this hotel last minute at the hotel website. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is at a central location in town. The rooms on the street side can be a bit noisy and some the furniture and telephone information are past their due date (9 digit phone numbers were changed to 10 digits in 1995!). The furniture in the lobby seems to have had its best days. The room itself was clean and decent.

The best thing about this hotel is the breakfast, the bread is freshly baked. A pity about the coffee, avoid the cans and order at the bar.

When you park at the recommended parking garage (rademarkt) and get a discount voucher, be aware that this only works at the first payment machine you see in the parking garage.

“This is our second stay at this hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2011

Once again we stayed at this hotel for our annual trip to the Dutch TT and stopping here puts us well in reach of the race circuit in Assen.

I remember thinking this time last year when we left the hotel on our motorcycle as we were being waved off by some of the hotel staff " i'll be back" and thats just what we did without even researching other hotels in the arear.

The only thing we did do differently this year was upgrade to a luxury double room in the old part of the hotel which was over looking the front and it lived up to its description very well apart from one slight thing, one of the bay windows, ( yes one of the bay windows) in this room only had net curtains therefore, as it was the very middle of the summer season the daylight shone through making it difficult to stay asleep after 5am.Thats the only negative point of our stay so I would like to get back to hotels good points as there are many.

Apart from the lack of blackout blinds the room was like something in a palace with a double jacuzzi lovely decor and plenty of space to move around. ALL the hotel staff were as pleasant as in our previouse stay and the restuarant at the front of the hotel was as good as anywhere I have ever eaten. (quite exspensive but very classy)

The breakfast, mmmmmmmmmmmmmm, you wont get a better english/continental breakfast anywhere else especially, as you are surrounded by totaly irresistable and freshly baked bread croissants and fruit loafs.

Will we stay at this hotel again next year?.................. Yes, i'm afraid were smitten and we dont want to risk upsetting our annual weekend away without the children.

See you again next year Schimmelpenninck Huys.
