We are frequent travelers to Friesland and thought a stay in a historic building would be a pleasant experience. Let me say first that the hotel itself is wonderful and we regret the lost night that we had to enjoy it to its fullest. We had the unpleasant experience of sharing the night with the annual Orange Ball on the Queen's birthday. There was no help with parking or bags, the fire alarm went of regularly until 1 or 2 AM, and coffee/room service was unavailable. All of this was due to the Ball and I'm certain that other nights would have been a different experience. It was clear on this night that the first priority was the Ball and its attendees. Hotel guests were an afterthought. What struck me was the consistent excuse that "we're shorthanded" and the absolute lack of sensitivity or apology for the situation. Certainly they had opportunity to plan for the event, but still chose to accept our reservation and charged us full fare for the night. As for parking, there were several places in front of the hotel (we were not allowed to park there -- due to the Ball, of course) and the closest public parking garage was 2+ kilometers away. Also, the parking garage was closed on Sunday, our ticket was in the auto, and it cost an additional $30 euros to have the garage opened for us. All in all, had the hosts been hospitable, gracious, or apologetic, we would have been more understanding. AS it was, we won't be back.
