“Getting better every year”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 February 2011

person found this review helpful

I stay in the Van der Valk hotel every year in February to visit relatives in the NE of the Netherlands. Through the years I have seen the hotel improve and they seem to be doing this all the time. With my last visit they had enlarged and redecorated the breakfast area very nicely. All the rooms are very spacious and the ones at the back overlook a quiet garden. The TV has lots of good channels and you get 4x30min free WiFi internet which works well. Staff is friendly and helpfull. The rooms are in a separate part of the building which has a second private entrance which you can open with your room keycard. The hotel has large conference and meeting rooms which are used a lot so you will see a mix of visitors at the hotel all day long which makes it lively. The hotel lies next to a main motorway so can be easily reached by car. The area around has lots of nature trails in the forrests. When in Assen its probably your best choice.

“Good Hotel for the traveller....excellent staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2010

The hotel was out of town, but this suited my needs as I was visiting family in the area, if you want to experience Assen on foot from the hotel - be prepared to cycle or walk. I found the staff extremely attentive and all spoke very good English. My best experience of the stay was the restaurant for breakfast (with an unusual 'full english') and dinner.
The room I booked was very nice and modern, the bathroom was functional but didn't feel like 'luxury'. I didn't like the soap dispensers. The bedrooms were to the back of the hotel through corridors and key activated doors, which was initially confusing! Overall, a very nice hotel, that I would stay in again.

“Good hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2010

Stayed at the Hotel Van Der Valk recently on a business trip. Was a bit hesitant about the hotel because of it's location. It is a 30 euro taxi ride to the centre of Rotterdam, however was pleasently surprised when I arrived.

The lobby is large and quite buzzy with a nice residents bar. Check in was quick. The room was lovely and big, especially the bathroom. Issues I had were with the internet. You only had 15 minutes free wireless time, before you had to pay for wireless. And I cannot see this hotel would be used for anything but business so it should be improved on. It was slow so by the time I logged on to the wireless I only had 8 minutes browsing time!

Also the TV channels were not working.

Breakfast was good and the staff were very nice. Overall would give this hotel 3 stars, but it certainly is lacking some business services.

“Great hotel. Really poor internet connection”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

hotel was well maintained and the staff nice.

Only complaint was that the Internet was the worst we had ever experienced. All our group suffered.

It was charged extra that was even more annoying given how poor it was. Ruined an otherwise great stay as had important files to download etc for work.

“Van der Valk good value for money, as always”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2010

We stayed here for 5 nights in early August 2010. The family-owned Van der Valk hotel chain has grown to probably the biggest middle class hotel chain in Holland and is famous for its good price-quality ratio. Hotel Van der Valk Assen was no exception to this rule. It is a mixture of business and family hotel. The hotel rooms are huge to European standards and each room has a large balcony. Ask for a room at the garden side of the hotel, which is more quiet. At the front side it is noisy, as you are overlooking the large (free) parking and a highway. The room had all facilities you expect including coffee/tea making facilities, not highly luxurious but good. Good desk to work and fast wireless internet which worked without any problem at a rate of EUR 25.00 for a week.

The hotel is located outside the city centre with easy access to the A28. It is worthwhile to rent a bike or even an e-bike (try this for EUR 17.50 per day if you have never experienced power assisted biking) at the hotel to cycle the surroundings or to go into the city centre as parking is difficult there.
