I was not sure about this hotel before arriving there. it is a 5 minute walk from the station. the hotel is in an excellent location and it has tables and umbrellas outside and there is a market on a saturday and wednesday. they had everything organised for the bike weekend. it was so simple to stay there, pay for your drinks when you got them same with food. the only down side was they restricted the menu by only having snacks available on the menu. there are shops galore round the area. there are plenty of restaurants and bars round the area also.. there is not too much historical things to see but there is bits and bobs.
if i ever go again i will definately stay there.
The hotel is only a 5 minute walk from the station and is easy to find. However, arriving on a Sunday night the kitchen was closed so I was force to find somewhere else, and the only places open were kebab shops and greasy pizza places. The room was spartan, but comfortable and clean. The main problem was the noise, with firecrackers at 11pm and noise from the bar intrusive until about 12.15am. No wonder they supply ear plugs in the room. No tea or coffee making faclities in the room was a slight downside. Breakfast was good, although it did not seem to have been replenished so scrambled eggs were congealed and the bacon was cold (but fine for a bacon butty)
I moved from Hotel Assen after staying for 1 week to Best Western de Jonge for another week. Best western de Jonge has usually a bit lower room-rate than Hotel Assen (about 10 euro). Great thing about this hotel is free wifi, free breakfast and great location to explore city center of Assen. It's located in the middle of city center where lots of shops, restaurants and malls are and just 5 min-walk to the train station. The front-desk staffs are quite friendly (especially male staff). Rooms are not fancy like 5 star hotels but you can stay at luxury room for 10 euro more (than standard room) and it's pretty spacious. King-size bed (IKEA style bed so it's rather cute than elegant) and sofa. You can ask for complimentary tea and teamaker. I am not sure about standard room but luxury rooms have bathtub.
If you don't want noisy at night, you can request for a room facing quite side of the alley. I stayed in the room where I could hear noisy at night from people outside of the restaurant or alley but I could deal with it and I rather wanted to see street-lights from my window than other quiter rooms facing residential houses.
Breakfast offers typical items like bread, cheese, ham, cereals and variety of fruits and yogurts, boiled/scrambled eggs and bacon. Not fancy but plenty of items to eat.
I enjoyed my stay at Best western de Jonge and if I come back to Assen, I will stay here again.
The hotel looked very nice from the outside and resturaunt area was clean and tidy. My room was on the very top floor and despite it having been apparently "refurbished" the room was quite smelly with wallpaper coming off the walls. The TV was so small and high on the wall that it was difficult to see anything. I asked to move rooms but was told "No, we're fully booked". There was a lot of banging noise from the street which kept me awake all night. This was not drunken revellers as it was a weeknight and not many people on the streets. Food was ok and service was generally ok but I hope I never have to go back.
