“If it weren't in Switzerland, this would be rated two stars at best”

Apparently finding decent cheap lodging in Zurich is difficult. This is about as cheap as you can find. If you're used to hostels in other countries, though, which are not just RELATIVELY cheap but ACTUALLY cheap, be prepared for an unpleasant surprise. Here, you'll pay about $50 for a dorm bed.

The main benefit of this place is that it is very clean and nice-looking. It also has a pretty solid breakfast.

Other than that, it falls short in most categories. The rooms are just average, not super nice or spacious or anything, which makes them seem not worth the price. You have to pay for internet, and it's not cheap. The hostel is located some distance from the main city center; it's only a 10-minute tram ride, but it makes it a bit less feasible to just stroll out for dinner or the like. Also, unlike many hostels I've stayed it, this one does not provide a kitchen for your own use, meaning you can't sidestep the outrageously high Swiss food prices by buying grocery store food at keeping it in the fridge.

To sum it up, the only reason this gets three stars is because I don't think there are any better deals in Zurich. Everything in Swizterland is expensive, so I have to give this a decent rating. If this hostel were in another country, at this price, I would call it a bad deal.

“Moderate hostel at a higher than average price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2010

Stayed here 29/7/10 for two nights. Booked by Internet on Swiss hostels website. Paid CHF 41.50 per night in a dormitory, including breakfast, plus CHF 2.50 local tax payable (unexpectedly) at the hostel - other hostels include it in the rate quoted on the website.

Located rather inconveniently in Wollishofen, a suburb two miles South of the centre and just a few minutes walk from Zürichsee (the lake). Can be accessed by train to Wollishofen, or tram 7 from the city centre (outside Hauptbahnhof) to Morgental stop (which is clearly marked in the tram); in both cases then a five minute walk, I initially found it difficult to find the way, also by hourly boat daytime from Bürkiplatz. It is in zone 10 (Central zone) for tickets. From the airport you need a two zone ticket and travel via Hauptbahnhof.

I was in a 4 bed dormitory, with washbasin. It was small and cramped and felt rather claustrophobic. There are lockers, one for each person, which are operated by a refundable CHF 2 coin. Good showers, separate from the room.

The ground floor is one huge open area, comprising the hostel catering and various seating areas, and an area for Internet.

Breakfast available from 6.30. Standard buffet. Includes cereal, ham, cheese, juice, hot drinks - also fruit which made it the best breakfast I had in Switzerland, good coffee and good range of bread.

I had the evening meal one evening, quite good, three courses and soft drink for CHF 17 (or just CHF 0.50 extra for beer).

There is no kitchen for self catering, as was the case in all the HI hostels I stayed at on this trip to Switzerland, which I found a drawback, and different from my last visit.

This is a very large and busy hostel. It is the highest HI grade, and the most expensive I stayed at in Switzerland. It was also the one I least liked. For the price the dormitory was too cramped, and both the dormitory and common areas were gloomy, better décor and lighting would help. But it was one of the best for catering, and notable for the friendly and helpful reception staff.

“very good”

all that you're looking for.
Clean rooms and facilities, good location, and a lot cheaper than any hotel in Zurich, that's for sure.

“Excellent hostel, only con is the location.”

So this is a really great hostel and the money you pay is really good considering Switzerland in general is super ultra expensive. Only negative point is location, you have to take a tram from the main train station and it's a bit complicated if you don't know the city.

Rooms and bathrooms were very clean. There are lockers in each room that are very secure. Good pressure for water in the shower, only thing is that you have to keep pressing the knob for more water every 30 seconds but that's Swiss efficiency for you. 24 hour reception and I always got the help I needed. Very international hostel...there were always loads of people socializing in the lobby lounge area. Basic breakfast buffet included! (once again, this is great for Switzerland!)
