The Scheuble is a three star hotel situated in the middle of Zurich, a very short walk from the cobbled streets of the old town. It is about 20 minute Taxi ride from Zurich airport or a short walk from the main line train station. I found it to be a relatively no frills hotel which was decent value at 160SF a night, when other more upmarket hotels in and near the centre were charging double that.
The hotel is situated at the end of Muhlegasse, and as mentioned by other reviewers below, guests may initially think they have made a big mistake, as the street appears to be a mini red light area with a sex shop dead opposite the hotel. But this area of Zurich is hardly the Reeperbahn and, although the junction with Haringstrasse is a popular location for ladies engaged in the oldest profession, it is not intimidating in the slightest. In fact I walked straight past then on the first night without realising they were trade.
Again, when looking at previous reviews I may well have had a double room for single occupancy as the room was adequately sized with a large comfortable bed, decent sized wardrobe and small desk section. And the separate en-suite bathroom was perfectly adequate. However the room was plain and there was not the facilities you would expect from a modern hotel, except for a large plazma tele on the wall. For example, no mini bar, no tea and coffee facilities and no air conditioning. The room did have a strange floor standing heating / cooling unit, but fortunately the room temperature was fine and I didn’t have to attempt to work out which of the large collection of knobs and switches on the top to make it do something. My room was at the back of the hotel overlooking the inner courtyard and as such was very quiet and two good uninterrupted nights sleep was had. But the street junction the hotel sits on is a fairly quiet location anyway with not much passing traffic, so I would imagine it would be the same if you had a room at the front.
The combined breakfast and bar area on the ground floor is small but adequate and the continental breakfast on offer wasn’t extensive in choice, but perfectly acceptable in terms of quantity and quality.
And finally Wi-Fi internet is available, but it is chargeable by prepaid card at 5SF for 30 minutes or 15SF for 3 hours.
