“Beautiful views. Shame about the food.”
Excellent location in Montreux and really worth booking a lake view room for the stunning outlook. The room had been renovated recently and was really very pleasant. However the bathroom was very small and toiletries provided only just for this standard of hotel. A small point but they bill themselves as "luxury". No bathrobes. No tea and coffee making facilities in-room. They do provide free coffee facilities in the foyer however where you can help yourself to Nespresso machines. However nobody told us about that when we checked in so we had to guess after a while. I asked for a kettle and was given one - no tea or coffee however. Made a fuss about providing an iron but I did get one. Internet access in-room is free. The staff are very young and the reception team are very pleasant and obliging. Everyone speaks english. However even though they were nice they weren't very forthcoming with any information eg breakfast times, the free tea and coffee, transport etc. Once you ask you are told but you have to ask. The serious disappointment was the restaurant which accounts for much of this 'average' rating. Again, views and outlook are stunning. We had an abyssmal meal and the service was atrocious. Again a very young team. There is a lot of theatre about deliverying food to the table. One waiter carries the meal on a tray whilst another one brings a luggage rack looking device for them to sit it on. What a waste of resources and not teaching the young team anything. They provided some nice charcuterie and bread. We ordered steak and bernaise sauce. Admittedly we've had steaks cooked several times in Europe which don't suit out antipodean tastes. However the plates were cold, the sauce in a pot straight out of the fridge and some tastless little straw like french fries. The steaks actually made me gag and my husband couldn't stomach his either. They were luke warm with a slightly "boiled" flavour (again not unheard of) and a somewhat gelatinous texture which gave them a fatty mouth feel. We left most of the meal untouched which is OK I guess except that we then sat fror 30-40 minutes with the food congealing on the plates in front of us with no comment from staff or offer to clear the plates - despite the head waiter removing our empty wine bottle. We might have tried dessert and coffee if we'd been asked but eventually just left. We commented to a lady who appeared to be a manager at reception that the service was very poor (after asking what time breakfast was served til) and she asked for our room number. However we were charged the full price for the meal when we checked out and had given up by then. Breakfast was adequate and service good both mornings but we might have expected more from a hotel of this standard. Had much better breakfasts at lesser hotels.
Room Tip: Look for a discount on accommodation websites or the hotel's website. Not worth full rack rate...
