“5* Hotel, 1* experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

From the moment we arrived we somehow knew it was not going to live up to our hopes and expectations. On arrival at the front of the hotel there were no staff around to assist with luggage, we had two large, one medium suitcase and two smaller bags. We found the front desk staff unhelpful, morose and uncaring. We asked for assistance to take the bags to our room and the dour and unsmiling Mansoor reluctantly brought them a few minutes later. He stayed long enough to leave the bags, did not even bother to explain how things worked in the room and left.
In the four days we were there there was no warmth or friendliness from the front desk staff.
On our first night, after travelling all day from Pontresina, we opted to have dinner in the Sinatra Bar. Big mistake. There was only one other table occupied and one bar stool taken. Even so it took over 10 minutes for the waitress/barmaid to bring us a menu. We both opted for the pasta with pesto. When it eventually came it was undercooked, and accompanied by toasted pine nuts. Now my idea of pesto is a mixture of pine nuts, garlic, basil, olive oil and Permesan. Apart from the pine nuts the other ingredients seemed to be missing. When asked if we had enjoyed our meal we said no, and gave our reasons why. This was met with "Oh". That was it, suffice to say we never opted to eat in the main restaurant during the remainder of our stay.
Breakfast and the breakfast staff were very good, as was the view from our De Luxe lake view room, but that was the sum total of the good parts.
Housekeeping was sloppy, we assumed the bedroom carpet was not vacuumed as the same piece of black plastic stayed in situ during the whole of our stay. on two days we had to ring down for shower gel that was not left in the bathroom after the room had been cleaned. On one other occasion we had to ring down for a toilet roll as there was hardly any paper left on the one still left there following the housekeeping visit.
The part that summed up our stay was on Christmas Day morning. I strolled through the lobby at around 08.20, no other guests around, just Mansoor on the desk. As I passed he never bothered to raise his head to say good morning or even, as one might have expected, Merry Christmas. This attitude just about sums up our experience.
We left later that morning, following another run-in with Mansoor. The room information offered guests who eat/drink in the hotel a discount of % from food/drink prices. Mansoor insisted this was for VIP guests only. However, on checking the wording again in our room the VIP part is not mentioned. After a bit of a stand off he very reluctantly took CHF10 from our bill. There was no "I hope you enjoyed your stay" or even "Can I ring for a taxi for you?". Please, do yourself a favour, forget the view, which was amazing, find a more friendly hotel in town. We ate one eveing at the Majestic Hotel, restaurant #45 - brilliant, food and staff a complete contrast to the Royal Plaza.

Room Tip: If you must stay at this hotel, so for a De Luxe lake view

I see many people here complain that the hotel does not live up to the 5-star rating. Not being a frequent visitor to 5-star hotel, I hesitate to make a judgement, but I probably agree. In a 5-star hotel I expected some level of luxury, some wow factor that wasn't there. But it doesn't mean the hotel was bad. I was in this hotel for 2 nights in a single room on a group tour. The room was large, the bed comfortable, bathroom with a bath tub in perfect condition. I did see little cracks and stains here and there that I would not expect in a 5-star hotel, but nothing ugly. I got a feeling though that the hotel was great once, but is not adequately maintained now.

All the usual amenities were there, expect perhaps tea-making facilities. The hotel offers free wired Internet access (no WiFi though), which I found a pleasant surprise in Switzerland. I understand half of the rooms enjoy a lake view, but I wasn't in one of those.

Buffet breakfast was good, with omelette, sausage, bacon, salads, etc.

Location is almost directly on the shore, at the central part of Montreux. I was given a free public transport card by the hotel (not sure if this is a standard practice or applied to our group tour), and with that it's very easy to move around the area. The Chillon Castle is something like 10 minutes away by bus.

The landscape in Motreux are absolutely magnificent (not the topic of this review though), so I didn't really spend much time at the hotel, enjoying the views outside. I suppose I can recommend this hotel, though I wasn't to any other in the area and can't compare. Do definitely recommend Montreux itself!

Room Tip: Try to get lake view. I regret not having a lake view room.

“impeccable view, relaxing spa & pool”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

Our family (and a dog) had a relaxing stay in this hotel. The staff were pleasant and professional.
Our view is simply the best so opt for the lake view. There is a balcony where you could chill and enjoy a drink.
The rooms are clean and spacious. The bed was comfortable and big. Location is near the epicenter of Montreux. About a 10 minute walk to the Casino area (considered the center of Montreux lakeside). Chateaux Chillon is a 15 minute bus ride away.
Indoor pool is a decent size with whirlpool beside it. We also relaxed in the hammam and sauna. Only downside for me was it is separate for gents and ladies so we had to do this separately. So, we had a zen experience.
Internet access is free so kids liked this, (no WIFI). We barely used it since we just chilled most of the time..
Breakfast was 29 CHF per person for a typical buffet breakfast. So this is a minus for us...
Overall, a relaxing and wonderful hotel. Thumps UP! Chapeau!

“A five star hotel... Maybe some time ago”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2011 via mobile

+huge hotel room
Nice view
Nice location
Cheaper than montreux palace

- outside appearance of the hotel
Inside: like a maze! (I parked my car in the garage an it took me almost 10 minutes to find the reception!)
You can access your room trough the lake side entrance without passing by the reception (huge security issue!!)
Booked my room for the weekend in two steps (first saturday to sunday and than I added one more night from friday to saturday, all through the internet) I sent an email to the hotel to confirm that they are aware of my bookings and get an answer that everything is ok. Then during checkin the receptionist was not aware and I had to explain him and the best was on saturday I got a call from the reception (very impolite by the way) asking me when I want to do my check out...

All in all these are things that should not happen in 5* hotels and when you can afford to pay a bit more take the montreux palace or go to vevey there are also some nice hotels.

“Magnificent view of the lake”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

Stayed two nights in February. The overnight rate was 365 Euro including breakfast. The best thing about this hotel was the view from the rooms over the lake. However, as there is a promenade right below the balconies, the passers-by can make excessive noise and the street lamps are too bright for a sound sleep. For that reason each room is equipped with automatic window blind. In our case, though, it broke down in the middle of the night at the first attempt to close it down. So we had to change the room. The room itself was of a decent size with comfortable beds, however the bathroom was in need of repair for the sink was cracked and the water taps were falling apart. We tried the Bellagio restaurant once and it was nice, but could have been better for 145 Euro exclusive of spirits. It is extremely convenient that there is a parking in the basement of the hotel (25 Euro per day). They advertise having a spa which is ridiculous. The so called "spa" consists of a tiny reception and two small rooms. We had our manicure done on the massage table!!! We did enjoy the swimming pool though. The overall impression of the service is mediocre. In general the hotel is over-estimated and in need of urgent repairs.

Room Tip: high floors with front view of the lake
