We were only able to spend one night in Zermatt, but we were fortunate to have chosen the Hotel Albatros. It was an amazing place to spend the night.
We called the night before our departure and they were able to accommodate the 3 of us without a problem. The hotel manager was wonderful, she gave us a choice of the types of room we could have, she showed us the a doubleroom and a single room next to each other, than she took us upstairs to view the suite. I have never been given a choice of a room before, so this was a wonderful suprise. We did choose the doubleroom and single room. Both the rooms were spacious and lovely.
The Hotel is located 10 min. walk from the train station, it is a easy walk. They also have a electric car that will come and pick you up. Since our train ride was 3.5 hours from the Halsiberg area, we chose to stretch our legs and walk to the hotel. It also gave of a chance to view Zermatt at a nice pace.
The hotel sits back from the main area of the village, it is very quiet, which is much appreciated, You can still hear the church bells in the morning.
Our rooms had a incredible view of the Matterhorn, so the morning sunrise was phenomenal. All the rooms have french doors that open onto a balcony with flowers, and lounge chairs, with a table, so you can sit out and enjoy the view with a glass of wine or whatever beverage you perfer.
The beds were wonderful, very comfortable, I loved the comforters, very warm and cozy. We had a TV in the room, a few English channels...BBC,CNN, but most of the channels were in German, as it should be.
Much to my suprise the hotel provided us with slippers and a very plush terrycloth robe, for use in the Wellness Center, or for whatever. They also have a safe in the room for valuables. Oh, and of course a hairdryer, which is a must for me. Bathrooms are so clean and will maintained, the showers are the best and the bathtub, although not built like ones here in the US is wonderful for soaking your tired body . I should also mention, they also provide Minibar, telephone, radio/alarm and WiFi.
Dinner is not served on the premises, but there are a incredible amount of resturants within wallking distance from the hotel. You will have no problems in chosing a good one. All the resturants usually display their menu with the prices, so you have an idea of what is being served and the cost.
Breakfast is served in the dining room downstairs 0730-1000, it is buffet style and of course you can order a warm dish, eggs with bacon, sausages, warm cereals. There is an array of breads, cheeses, cold cereal, juices, coffee, teas. You will not go hungry. We were fortunate enough to have our breakfast at a table that gave us a view of the Matterhorn. Life does not get any better than that.
Newspapers are in abundance, so if you want to stay in contact with world events it is at your disposal, but you are on holiday why worry about world events!
The hotel was a wonderful suprise for us, we have stayed in Zermatt last year, and we stayed with the Best Western, although the Best Westen was nice,, the Hotel Albatros was even better.
Cozy, friendly, and we will return....................... I should mention the cost. Doubleroom was 200 CHF/Single 140.00 CHF. These prices were quite reasonable for Zermatt. I also need to mention that the breakfast was inclusive with the room.
