“Excellent hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I stayed here for 7 days in January 2012 on a skiing holiday. The hotel has a very good and quiet location, only 5 minut walk to the nearest skibus stop and 5 minut walk to the city center. The rooms are good and clean, they are exactly as shown on the hotels homepage. The hotel staff is very friendly and helpfull. The breakfast is very good. I can highly recommend this hotel for a skiing holiday in Zermatt.

“Picturesque hotel in a quiet part of town.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

We stayed at the Albatros for a week in July 2011, whilst on a walking holiday in Zermatt. The Albatros is a picturesque, chalet-style hotel situated on a quiet street a couple of minutes walk from the centre of Zermatt. The rooms are bright, clean and spacious, with comfortable beds and large balconies all facing towards the Matterhorn, although you'll need to be on a higher floor to get a good view of it over the buildings on the other side of the street. The shower (which is always something I'm particularly interested in after a long day hiking) was excellent.

The staff on reception were always very friendly and helpful.

Being a small, family run hotel, it's not really reasonable to expect them to have the resources of the larger hotels in town, but it's worth bearing in mind that this may introduce some compromises. Our train arrived in Zermatt at around 7:30pm, but the hotel is only able to provide a complimentary transfer from the station until 7pm. There are plenty of taxis around the station, so we didn't have any difficulty transferring, but the short taxi ride still cost us CHF17! The hotel's reception also closes at around 9pm (if they're not expecting any more guests), so you're given a code to open the front door after this time. Consequently, after 9pm the hotel's bar is shut, so there's no chance of quiet drink in the hotel after dinner before turning in for the day.

Despite being late July, after the weekend the hotel appeared to be almost completely deserted (as far as we could tell, there were only four other guests). This meant that the buffet breakfast was rather sparsely equipped, with no hot food set out at all on four mornings. I assume that we could probably have just asked for scrambled eggs or similar, but this was never mentioned by our waitress. Given the number of people that would be turning up for the buffet, it doesn't seem unreasonable they the hotel wouldn't want to set out loads of food that won't get eaten, but being the last to breakfast most mornings, it sort of felt a bit like we were turning up to scrounge through the last few scraps left by everyone else. Still, I reckon that if the hotel had been busier this wouldn't have been an issue at all and, as I said, I can see where they were coming from.

Overall though, the staff ensured that we had a really nice time and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Albatros to others (so long as there are enough other guests to fill up the breakfast buffet).

Room Tip: Unless you're absolutely desperate to be able to see the Matterhorn from your room, save your ca...

“What a gem of a hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 April 2011

What a warm, welcoming place to stay. The friendliness and ease of every request made this simple but cosy hotel a joy to stay in. We had a room facing the Matterhorn and thought we might be disappointed in not being able to see it during our 2 night stay. It was covered in clouds when we arrived, but the next morning I was awake early and peeked out the curtains to find it bathed in a wash of brilliant sunshine! What a joyous sight to behold and we were so lucky that our request for a room with a view had been upheld. We even sat at a table with a view of it at breakfast.

I was travelling with my elderly mother who is not very mobile. Upon asking if the hotel had a wheelchair, they said no they didn’t but would try to obtain one for us. Within half an hour of our arrival they had located one and it was ours to use for the duration of our stay. They even went and picked it up for us. That is fantastic service and it was all delivered with genuine smiles and a willingness to help. This is so different from a hotel we stayed in after that in Lucerne, who didn’t really want to help at all.

This hotel is a bit out of the town and a small incline to get up to (a steep push for a wheelchair) but it was quiet and away from all the party noise of the skiers. The breakfast was nice with some selections.

The whole feeling of The Albatross hotel is one of warmness and hospitableness. We are truly glad to have chosen to stay here. Annette in particular was bubbling over with her desire to please and be friendly so we thank you for making our short stay a very enjoyable one. Zermatt was one of our favourite places on our trip and the wonderful attitude of the hotel certainly helped in making it so.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the Matterhorn.

“Great hotel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2010

Before booking a room, I couldn't make up my mind on whether to pick the big room or the one with a view to the Matterhorn. The receptionist was very helpful and was eager to book BOTH rooms for me until I made up my mind (the following day) without charging me for anything. That was a great relief for me as I had plenty of time to decide. That was the best service I have EVER had. Not only that, but they picked us up from the main train station as soon as we arrived and dropped us off there on the departure day!

Room was big and very clean. Great bed and bathroom. Free WiFi too. The balcony had chairs and a table for each room, from where we had a magnificent view to the Matterhorn. The breakfast was big and had a good variety. The hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the center of the beautiful village.

The rooms are a bit expensive but again, everything in Switzerland is.
