“Lovely View”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2010

We stayed for one night at this hotel during our travel to Zermatt just last week. The hotel was very comfortable, tastefully decorated, reasonably large by European standards and we had a great view of the mountain ranges from our room and verenda attached to our room. The only thing missing was a percolater for coffee/tea in the room. Its being a 4 star , that's the minimum required especially in the cold. They could have also out it out in the main lounge as some hotels do, but it wasn't there at all. The hotel is not on the main road, which is good as then you avoid all the noise, but it was just about 7 mins walk from the main street and the station. The matterhorn station was right across the hotel , which was great.

“Great hotel for skiing vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 March 2010

We enjoyed a one-week vacation here for the 4th time in as many years. In earlier years we have stayed at other Zermatt hotels without returning but we keep coming back to National. We like the location - just across the street from the fastest lift to get you into the system or to bus-stop to Klien-Matterhorn. This hotel is not pretentious but has good quality. The rooms are nothing special but clean and relatively comfortable, the lounge area is relaxing but nothing special, the dining area is nice without being remarkable or fancy and the food is varied and quite good (and I am picky!) - some dishes are excellent (usually the one of the two first courses) and others are good (usually the main course). There is always a nice salad bar. The spa area is pretty clean but requires that guests are naked .- may be off-putting to shower and soak in the whirlpool with the guy sitting nearby in the dining room. We've met guests many returning guests, including regulars from Switzerland, so I guess we are not the only ones who think that this hotel's "logo" is fitting - "coming home". The staff is friendly and helpful and its a comfortable place. One little irritation - when you pay so much to stay here they could actually refill the lotion and shampoo every day - they never refill and there are limited amenities - bring your own hair conditioner.

“Friendly Staff, Wonderful Spa”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 February 2008

Had a wonderful 10 days in this hotel. The location is superb, directly opposite the Sunnega lift. With the ski areas linked, I could walk out of the hotel, get the Sunnega lift up and ski over to the Matterhorn area quicker than getting the bus and queuing to get up the Matterhorn lifts.
We had a quad room, double bed downstairs with two twin beds upstairs, perfect for a familly. The room was a good size with a view of the Matterhorn, and the Gornergrat railway passing close by.
The spa is great, large swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam bath, sauna, and a unique cave footspa thing (must be seen to be believed). Children are forbidden from the spa area (except the pool) after 4:30.
The staff were exceptionally friendly. The breakfast buffet was varied and copious. The evening meal was of good quality and more than enough for the hungriest skier.
My one gripe, on a couple of mornings our breakfast table was not ready prepared. For a 4 star hotel, a guest shouldn't have to ask for their table to be prepared in the morning. But this is a very minor point for what is a very pleasant hotel.

“Excellent, Excellent, Excellent....”

Having spent one month touring France and Switzerland, I have to say that Hotel National was the best hotel of our holiday.

The hotel is in a fabulous location, just opposite the Sunnegga Ski Lifts, and only a few minutes walk from the main train station (to reach Gornergrat). It is about a five minute walk from the main town area for shopping, restaurants and bars.

Our room was was generous in size and was located on the third floor, with amazing views of the Matterhorn.

We had the bed and half board option. Every night, we were presented with a five course meal with choices. The food was delicious.

The hotel also has a lovely bar for having a pre-dinner cocktail, again the bar staff are friendly and helpful.

The staff of this hotel were extremely helpful and friendly. They are a real asset to this hotel. The front office staff will happily assist with any query.

Great attention to detail from the house keeping staff. We'd head down to breakfast around 9am most mornings, and by the time we had returned at 9.30, the room had been cleaned. Very efficient indeed.

The spa facilities in the hotel are great. A lovely way to unwind after a long day in the snow.

I really can't recommend this hotel enough. I'll definetly be staying when we next return to Zermatt.

“Good value. Nice Spa.”

During one of our many week-end trips to Zermatt, we spent just one night here after checking out from another awful one night experience (Gornergrat Dorf Hotel - separate review) in Zermatt. We were delighted with this hotel. Despite the last minute booking everything turned out to be perfect at the National Hotel. We had a big triple room with nice furniture, two balconies, clean bathroom etc.
The breakfast buffet is excellent with huge choice (both hot and cold), the bar was great in the evening. We didn't try the hotel restaurant since only on B&B but I heard the food was good. The staff was very helpful and smiling. You need to be aware that the Gornergrat train passes by just in front of the hotel. The train is not noisy though since it's a cablecar. To avoid frustration ask for a room on 3rd or 4th floor which will take you up above the train level and provide you with a better view.

A plus for this hotel is their big spa. It has a not-too-small swimming pool, massage facilities and a number of different other installations (jacuzzi, sauna, steambath etc etc).
