“This is a gem of a hotel and a real value for Zermatt!”

We arrived in Zermatt having no reservation and on a busy day, and proceeded to scout out the hotel situation. Surprise, surprise...after walking all over town and visiting the tourist office, this hotel stood right across from the train station and had the best deal going for us. It was 156 Swiss Francs for two with breakfast, and by Zermatt standards that is only slightly more than a youth hostel! The staff spoke English to an excellent level and were very professional, the hotel was clean and comfortable, and some of the rooms give you a triple view: the train station square (people watching), the main street leading up the hill, and most importantly: THE MATTERHORN! I'm very surprised this hotel isn't rated higher on the Zermatt hotel list, I have no complaints at all. It is not a five-star hotel by any stretch, but its location, cleanliness and service, and value for money make it a solid recommendation from me.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony view of the Matterhorn, such as 304 or 305

“A Beautiful Hotel In A Beautiful Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 July 2011

This incredible hotel is situated in very high Alpine region, and is only accessible by train from the town of Zermatt (the last of which departs the town around 6PM). After that, you're stuck up there for the night together with the stunning Swiss scenery.
We managed to catch the hotel at a quiet period, and attended dinner with only around six other guests. The food was a delicious venison roast, probably the finest hotel meal I've ever come across. The staff were pleasant and later came to eat in the restuarant (they too stay at the hotel, for weeks on end they told us), but were more than happy to top up drinks if we requested. Later, we sat at the bar with the staff watching the Champions League match between Internazionale and Tottenham. The staff were social and were a credit to the hotel. The rooms were luxurious complete with en-suite spacious and beautiful bathrooms. Snow begun to fall around 11PM, and we awoke next morning to a snow-covered mountaintop, which added to the whole romantic atmosphere the hotel creates. Would definitely come back here on several occasions, magnificent place.

“Great location - good value”

Zermatt is an expensive place and the Gornergrat is in our view good value against that premise.

The hotel is a little dated but we liked it - this was our second visit there the first being in March 2008. We found the staff friendly and helpful, loved the location very close to the ski bus and Gornergrat Railway and enjoyed sitting in the panoramic windows of the bar after a days skiing watching the world go by.

Rooms were clean and perfectly adequate although you need to be aware that being on the main echoey street through the village you will (if you have a front or side facing room) hear people making their way noisily back to their own hotels at all hours of the night.

We stayed on a half board basis and food was also fine and plentiful especially given the cost of eating out elsewhere in Zermatt.

We noticed quite an improvement in the general standards at the hotel since 2008 so that may explain some of the poor and older reviews. Even based on our 2008 experience we were happy to go back to the Gornergrat so were pleasantly surprised this year.

“value for money”

The Hotel is in a perfect place! Cant be more center.
Some parts of hotel are renewed, like lobby, maybe restaurant need a refreshment, for sure the elevators.
the staff is very friendly and the room big enough with renewed bathroom.
There is a nice bistro bar in the hotel , where you can watch people outside.
the breakfast was enough but nothing warm, until u order eggs.
The major problem with us was the internet connection, not stably and when you can reach it just in the main lobby!
the food was good at the restaurant, nothing special.
for ski is perfect hotel, and childs friendly!

“Very unfriedly staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2011

I was with my son in Zermatt who is 3 years old. He very urgently needed to go to toilet. The receptionist did not allow us to go to the toilet as we were not clients at the hotel . She then wanted 2 Francs to let him go to the toilet. As we had just arrived at the trainstation we had no money available and I was not able to give her 2 Francs. She had no compassion adn did send us away. I have never exirienced such an child unfriendly behaviour somewhere else!!!
