“Eight years a Guest and will always be back!!”

My Family and I have been visiting the Grand Hotel Schonegg (aka Schonegg Chalet Hotel) each New Year for a week for the last eight years and have at no time been disappointed by our stay. The quality of the service, the friendliness of the owners and all the staff ,the wonderful food at breakfast and dinner (and a very extensive and well priced wine list) all leave our family wanting to come back for more each year and that is what we do.... we had stayed in other Hotels in Zermatt prior to arriving at the Schonegg but none served us more well. You really can ski back to the Hotel and the Bar attracts as many locals as it does guests and has a great atmosphere....along with a very accomplished and lively piano player! The New Years Eve Dinner and Party is a must and even comes with your own indoor party fireworks... we now bring many friends to that celebration and there is no better view of the fireworks display on New Years Eve than from the Hotel balcony which provides the best view of Zermatt and the Matterhorn beyond. The new rooms in a modern wing are very stylish and comfortable and where else could you lie in the bath gazing at the Matterhorn! We will return and return again....well at least until I can no longer stand on the skis!

•Excellent.
•Friendly helpful staff. They kindly arranged a meal in their restaurant after our late arrival and they picked us up at the train station.
•Better and cheaper restaurants for dinner within easy walking distance, so B&B terms worked well.
•Good breakfast, pleasant dining room.
•Lovely spacious quiet attic room with superb Matterhorn view.

“No other hotel in Zermatt has this combination of attributes!”

I have been going to Zermatt since 1971 when I first arrived to work there for a year and I have been coming back almost every year since, even when I lived in Whistler for ten years. This year I hope to go twice for skiing, once in May for ski touring and again in August to climb with my good friend Franz.

The Schonegg is a magical place. The new hotel replaced the original Schonegg which was at one time the only building in this whole area of Zermatt so the family back then was able to pick the first and best view location in the village. I don't know of any hotel that has all of the things that you need for a perfect stay.
1) Four Star (shoud be Five but as a four it attracts fewer of the "stuffy" older crowd".
2) A mid size, family run hotel that will give you the best personalized service you have ever had.
3) Owners that grew up in Zermatt so they can give you the best advice possible on where to go and when to get the best skiing, shopping, dining and hiking.
3) Gourmet dining with a fantastic breakfast selection.
4) Great spa.
5) A wonderful vibrant bar for after ski, before and after dinner.
6) A quiet library lounge with fireplace.
2) Ski right to the front door at the end of the day.
3) Two minute walk to the Sunnegabahn base (the best starting point to be close to)
4) Five minute walk to the main street, Gornergrat train station and main train station.
5) Sixty meters above the town ( Go to the main Zermatt web site to see the (Ober-
häusern web cam - this is the view from the hotel front deck)
6) An unobstructed view out over the town that is the best in Zermatt, with the best Matterhorn angle.
7) A private elevator and tunnel that take you up 60 meters to the hotel lobby from village level.
8) Well appointed and spotlessly clean rooms with a choice of traditional design in the main hotel, modern design in the new wing.

“Excellent all-rounder”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

An fantastic New Year holiday. The staff were all extremely helpful and the food was excellent value considering the standard and the effort the chefs had gone to. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel if your looking for a ski-in ski-out, half board set up that will have all of your needs catered for.

Room Tip: Ask for a Matterhorn view if available, though all are very good.

“Christmas in Zermatt - magical”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

Our family has just returned from a wonderful christmas in Zermatt. Three days of sunshine followed by three days of fresh snow, the skiing could not have been better. In addition to the superb skiing was the wonderful care and attention to detail of the team at the Schonnegg. We emailed from the train to Visp that we were arriving and were greated at the station by the porter and his electric bus to take us and the luggage on the short drive to the hotel. Our two rooms were well appointed and very clean and above average size for a European hotel room. While the bath is not marble and ultra modern it was quite suitable. One of our rooms was a matterhorn view and our kids, down the hall had a standard with one of them on the pull out sofa (there were less complaints than usual about the pull out).

The food is outstanding! We were half-board, each day the croissants were fresher than the previous day - if possible. Our waiters Luca and Rafaelle quickly learned what type of coffee we preferred in the morning and it always arrived promptly. Each five course dinner was special and although I wasnt always certain what I was eating, I was glad that the chef had put the combination together. For the kids, the chef was always happy to offer substitutions for our less adventurous, whether it was simply substituting a consomme for a cream soup with a scary name or substituting schnitzel for a main course.

Each evening we went to the small bar before dinner. It seems to be a locals hangout and one evening some of the locals gave an impromptu musical performance. Very special.

As soon as I pay off the second mortgage I had to take out for the trip, I will be back!

Room Tip: Our room was right above the bar with an outdoor patio. We enjoyed keeping the window open. Peopl...
