“Lovely”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

I stayed at this hotel for one week at the end of January with my husband, son and fiancee and daughter. We booked the trip through Inhgams travel company. This is the third hotel of a similar standard that we have stayed at in Zermatt. As the Alex was rated 51st out of the hotels in Zermatt I was apprehensive about the standard before we arrived but we all really enjoyed our stay and I think it deserves a much higher ranking. We had three rooms in total, two were described as small, twin rooms and were located in the annex and one was a single room. All the rooms were a good size, and the twin beds were pushed together and were comfy. The rooms were nicely decorated and the bathrooms were well maintained and clean. The corridors of the annex seemed a little dated.
The bar area of the hotel was delightfully comfortable with lots of interesting nooks and crannies and was a lovely place to sit after a day's skiing or before dinner
Dinner was delicious and breakfast was very good with plenty of choice.
All the staff were friendly and helpful.
The hotel is only 3-5 minutes walk away from the Gornergrat Station and that is wearing ski boots and carrying skis. The ski room is a great size compared with other hotels that we have stayed in.
The pool was large for a hotel pool with several loungers and well maintained.
The only negative point for me is that I feel other hotels are slightly better value for money.
I would be very happy to stay at the Alex again.

“Quirky decor and major character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We stayed here two nights as part of a group tour. The hotel is a very short walk from the train station. The lobby of the hotel is very charming and warm. The bar has several little nooks with different themes such as The Highlander, Cupid's Corner, and several others. The hotel is a bit of maze, you can tell it was once two or more hotels joined together. We were in the back elevator. The pool looked very nice but we didn't have a chance to try it. Our room was small but had lots of character. The framed prints were all of local sights and history. I enjoyed just checking out all of the artwork in the hotel. The bed headboard was some sort of animal print, dark wood, velour was also in play. The bathroom was huge and had windows to air out.

Dinner was pretty good. It was a local fish of some sort. Breakfast was OK, but we were part of a tour so I'm sure our experience was not typical. The large key and chain can be left in a wall contraption at the front desk which gives you a small key that will unlock your large key later. It was inconvenient only having one key between the two of us staying in the room.

“A bit of Swiss Bliss”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

When you walk in to Hotel Alex you feel like you have come home. Large quiet rooms, and thick plaster walls protect you from the harsh winter weather, gently tucking you in for the night. Libations (the internally warming kind and others) are available in the cozy bar area, the kind of place that's not meant for "knocking back a quick one" but rather a long pleasant low-key evening of relaxation and friendship.
The hotel is clean, beds are comfy, the rooms are individually unique. Lots of dark wood, curved walls and wide open arms to welcome you in from the cold...Enjoy!

“Quaint”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

Hotel Alex has the ambience of old world ski lodge. It is full of interesting wood carvings in all areas of the hotel including the rooms. The rooms are quite large, and on entry, looks a little gawdy, but the bed is very comfortable. The bathroom is quite large and dated, but clean. We found the room to be overheated, and could not control the temperature.
Our dinner and breakfast were included, dinner was very basic and salty, breakfast was nothing special, stale croissants!!

“Loved the Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2011

The hotel was absolutely wonderful. The views were amazing. The rooms were very unique and made you feel as if you were in a wonderful place. You could walk anywhere you wanted. There was a wonderful outside patio, expansive pool and everything you could imagine. The hotel staff, with the exception of a couple of staff in the restaurant, were very helpful, attentive and could answer any questions about the area, directions, the history of the hotel and whatever you needed to know. The decor is quite amazing and there are lots of decorated coves in the lobby where you can visit or relax with a drink and just take in all of the decorating. The service from the others made up for the rude waiters.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony with a view of the Matterhorn. Doesn't hurt to ask. Be prepared for the pric...
