“Very good value, great locations and very comfy beds :)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

We are a young married couple in search of great skiing on route to Chamonix via Zermatt. Having just spent a week in Austria in hostels and pension, Hotel Darioli was very comfortable and great value. Our room had a bathroom which was more spacious than most small european hotels of this quality. The beds were excellent and we slept very well. Our room (302) was at the back of the hotel and very quiet. Only a 5 min walk to the train station, Gornergratt rail and about 10 min walk to the bottom of the gondola to the base of the Matterhorn. The hotel is right in the heart of the village with coffee shops and restaurants very close by. Ski rentals are available at many shops (although to reduce the amount of time you spend walking through the village with equipment I suggest renting at the Intersport located at the gondola base). We wanted to ski on our day of check-out so we were able to leave our luggage on the 3rd floor near the elevator - which wasn't totally secure or locked, but safe enough for us. The hotel owner offered a breakfast at reduced cost at a nearby restaurant, but we opted to just grab coffee and croissants at a nearby bakery and hit the ski slopes early instead. I would most certainly stay at this hotel again as our experience of skiing the Matterhorn was unforgetable. Ski passes and rentals are expensive compared to other French and Austrian resorts - but the blue sky ski day at the foot of the Matterhorn was worth every penny.

Room Tip: The hotel is located on the busy main village "street"... chose a room at the back of the...

“Reasonable Rates, Clean, and great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

Just came back from 4 nights in Zermatt. Check-in on 3 rd floor, the resturant staff can guide you. Our room included a bathroom, but some rooms do not. We stayed in 403. It was clean and had a cute little view of the village outside our window. The location is superb. It is only a 5 minute walk to main train station. Also, if you ski down to the bottom you can easily bypass the mass of people at the end of the day coming down on train and walk to hotel..it was easy. I love Zermatt. The skiing is great for beginner to advanced and it ranges from wide open glacier skiing all the way down to treeline. The views are spectacular. The lift tickets were reasonable. We paid 203.00 CHF for 3 day pass. Eating in Zermatt is pricey. There is a co-op by train station. Stock up on small supplies..like bread, prosciotto, cheese and have breakfast in room. If you are staying at the Darioli right outside your window makes a nice little frig:-). The hotel has two restaurants..a grill (pricey) and a stube in front. The stube is VERY popular so make reservations. We didn't eat at the grill as the Stube was great. The scalloped potatoes they serve with dishes are awesome and of course the fondue was great! I have been to Zermatt 6 times and would go back again and again.
This hotel was not fancy, but it was clean, warm, and comfortable.

Room Tip: Room 403 was great and had a bathroom/shower.

“Good value and location in Zermatt”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2011

Hotel is close enough to the train station that you can walk with your luggage. Check-in was fine, efficient and down to business. Room 401 was small but fine, and since we had asked for an extra bed for our 15 yr old son, they had already installed a folding bed in the "living room", which is a small space separated from the main room by a sliding door.
Room and bathroom were clean.
Microscopic elevator (max 320 kilos) available, as well as stairs.
If you're in Zermatt for hiking like we were, and do not intend to spend much time in your hotel room, this could just be what you're looking for. On check out day, you can also leave your luggage on the 3rd floor, go hiking or skiing and pick it up at then end of the day before you grab the shuttle back to Tasch.
Pros:location, rates, room 401 is great for couple with child or teen, clean
Cons:rooms are small, don't expect "concierge" like service, you may hear noise occasionnaly from the street below or from other rooms (no big deal unless you're a very fragile sleeper).

“The hotel cancelled our long standing reservation and offered no help finding alternative lodging”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 March 2011

Our family booked rooms for a busy period many months in advance and several weeks prior to our visit received an e-mail stating "I am verry sorry, but I have to cancel the room .... Because I made a big mistake." We had to scramble at the last minute to find alternate lodging.

“Great location in the middle of town”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 March 2008

There were only a few rooms available in Zermatt for the Friday and Saturday night we wanted, so we felt lucky to find this one at the last minute. Our email reservation went smoothly.

The Darioli is very easy to find (just head up the street from the train station) and centrally located, convenient to everything. We were on the back side of the hotel, and our room was very quiet even when the crowds outside were noisy.

Our room was small and minimally furnished but clean, with good quality bed linens. The bathroom was larger than expected, given the size of the room, and nicely updated. The towels, however, were thin and shabby and should have been replaced some time ago. Soap and two packets of shampoo are provided.

There are no amenities at this guesthouse-style hotel (other than the elevator). No breakfast was available, so we bought our own food at the local grocery store and ate in the room, then had coffee later at a restaurant terrace with a good view of the Matterhorn.

I would look for a more luxurious place to stay if we went back to Zermatt, but this one was okay for a couple of nights.
