...are you planning to go to Zermatt during holiday season? Well, you better get your plans ready quick because this beautiful town will be packed almost 6 months in advance with no chance for you to just drop by and look for room...not even a chance to extend your stay at all.
The whole experience at the Julen Hotel felt like we were having a good round of luck...first, we were picked up at the train station (remember that Zermatt is a no car town) by this cute little electric shuttle bus. Our driver took our luggage himself directly into our room while we were checking in...I need to make a pause here to let you all know that if you have the chance to stay in this hotel, there is good chance that you will be welcome by the most incredible reception manager in the world...very smart and genuinely polite. We saw her again during dinner when a horror costumer kept complaining about the decoration of her table (dull face); I wish I could've taped this because the way she handled this lady was just masterful. This hotel is very lucky to have her at the front.
Continuing with our lucky momentum, we were taken to our room which just blew our minds: the wooden walls and ceiling, the bright and cozy colors and the unbelievable view to the Matterhorn were just enough to make our trip worth it. But it wasn't over.
After a long walk into town we were ready for our special Christmas dinner: a 5-course masterpiece dinner with veal, deer, salmon, veggies and a full gourmet dessert buffet...the kind of dinner you take pictures at as an attempt to keep the smell and flavors in your mind forever. Amazing.
When we returned to our room, we saw that the bed sheets and covers have been moved and prepared for us for a good night sleep, which was a very nice and classy touch.
Waking up with the view of the Matterhorn from your window is absolutely mind blowing. After a good shower (bathroom was very spacious and pristine clean) we were off to grab our breakfast: big selection of meats, cereals, fruit juice, bread, tea and coffee and everything you need to start a good day. Everything fresh and well presented.
Before we left we gave ourselves a little treat...a spa session to die for. They are very flexible with the appointments so you will not have any problem booking a slot without compromising any other plans you may have.
Any negative points? Apart from the (free) weak WiFi signal, mentioning the out of place, unnecessary Egyptian desert paintings and decorations from the pool area seems a bit unfair and silly when the whole experience, service and quality of this hotel made this trip one of the best in recent years.
*As a side note: consider taking the Glacier Express to get to Zermatt; this comfortable, slow pacing train runs up and down the most beautiful mountains in Switzerland and it's just a pleasure to ride.
Very clean Rooms, a nice medium Spa in the basement. The Food was great and the location just great! I would stay there again!
Great little hotel, true to it's name and very romantic. A nice cozy place and our room was HUGE - I think we had a junior suite with 2 balconies -- one had a nice view of the Matterhorn the last day when the fog lifted. Comfortable and clean, we enjoyed our stay here very much. The pool area is beautiful but unfortunately we didn't indulge in the hot tub/spa area as it was nude bathing and, being modest Americans, not really into that! We had complimentary breakfast each morning which was fabulous - fresh bread, fresh-squeezed o.j., eggs for boiling, meats and cheeses, yogurt and muesli. Really nice with friendly service! I'll review the hotel restaurant, but I got the prix fixe menu and was pretty disappointed in it. Oh, and there's a bar across the street that can get a little rowdy but normally folks aren't out too late since they prefer to hit the slopes early so it wasn't too bad. Other than that, a great hotel and a great time in Zermatt!
A charming gemuetliches Hotel with a great Spa & big Swimmingpool. Eat in the Stube downstairs .. have Raclet or Fondue. We skiied into Cervinia in mid November it was perfect!! We also hiked up to Furrie a little mountian village .
I cant wait to do it again!!
