“great location for skiing in Zermatt”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

I booked this hotel mainly for its location. Wanted to be as close as possible to transport to get us up the mountain as I hate having to walk any distance in ski boots. This hotel has an excellent location just about 2 mins easy/flat walk to the entrance of the Sunnegga train. The hotel is also walkable to the Gonergrat (about 5-6 mins) but you can also take the hotel taxi or another taxi if you don't feel like walking that far in ski boots.

The hotel also has a good basement ski room with private lockers to store your skis & where your ski boots are warmed overnight.

Staff are all absolutely delightful. Friendly, efficient, polite. We were on half board and found dinner quality to be very good (particularly enjoyed the cheese selection each night).

We had requested a quiet room and got one. there wasn't a sound to be heard during the night which was excellent. We slept very soundly. Our room also had a balcony but we didn't use it. There is a lovely "spa" smell around the corridors of the hotel which is pleasant and noticeable every time we stepped out of the lift.

Decoration is a little "quirky" eg instead of flowers/plants on tables in the lounge/bar area there are little fabric bags stuffed with cotton wool & wire. Overall decor wasn't really to my taste but everything was spotlessly clean and everyone was so nice, that we just overlooked the quirkiness.

A lovely indoor heated pool with loungers around it was a bonus and nice to relax in after removing the ski boots at the end of the day. There is also an outdoor hot tub which I had intended to use but never got round to. The sauna/steam room area (which also looked nice) has a compulsory nudity code. I never got round to getting any treatments in the spa but they seemed very popular with other hotel guests.

The hotel was busy the week we were there. Most guests were swiss, french or german. Mainly couples but a few large groups and some families too.

This is a really good base for a skiing holiday. It was so cold the week we were there that we were actually pleased that we were staying half board and didn't have to venture out at night.

A really enjoyable base for a skiing holiday in Zermatt and one that I'd recommend.

“Good quality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

This is a perfect managed hotel whith caracter and the typical swiss spirit you can expect in such a destination. The owner and his wife mostly eat at dinner in the restaurant, which we found appreciable. We experienced the whole staff as nice and professionnal.
I spent four nights there, two with my fiancée and two on my own because of a business workshop.
Other advantages of the "Alpenhof": an impressive restaurant, mostly good food, a reasonnable choice at breakfast, the quietness offering a perfect sleeping and a sufficient spa area with an marvellous outside jacuzzi you will enoy in case of bad weather. In top of that, the piano bar offers an excellent choice of drinks and a delicious atmosphere.
No doubt that the house guarantees an enjoyable stay for everyone who are looking for a traditionnal and cosy atmosphere.
If you are looking for a house providing fitness amenities or a hotel located directly at the main pedestrian street, you have to choose another house.
All in all, this is a good alternative for those who don't want to spend too much by choosing a five stars house.

“Great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

We stayed for 4 nights at the end of August as part of an organised tour. We loved this hotel. The room was a good size and was bright green (not to everyones taste but I liked it!) with a small sofa and a balcony. The beds were comforable and it was very clean. There were a ridiculous amount of lights in the room which looked pretty, but I think added to the temperature of the room which wasn't ideal in August!
The food (breakfast and dinner) was very good and served in a lovely restaurant. Our waiter Oliver was such a nice guy - always smiling and friendly whilst being very attentive.
This is a great hotel and I woudn't hesitate to go back (when I can afford it again!!)
My only minor complaint is that the swimming pool was freezing! I didn't get a chance to try the other spa facilities, but others we were on the tour with said they were very good.
