“Super service and style”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We stayed at the Backstage for a long weekend in February 2012. The hotel combines super style, great friendly service, fabulous amenities and a good location in town.

We (and another couple) were both in "cube" rooms, which are a fabulous, unique design. The centre of the room has a metal framed cube, the top of which is the sleeping area, and underneath are the shower/loo/bath. The set up enables a nice large sitting area as well. Room was fitted out with espresso machine, blu ray, mini bar, "fireplace" (solid fuel as kind of a gimmick), candles, adjustable mood lighting and all the usual essentials. Bed was comfortable and big. Towels were a little basic. Robe with hood was essential for the dash to the hot tub.

The amenities are great. The 7 station spa experience is really cutting edge. The hot tub provided a well needed soak after skiing.

Location is good but not perfect for skiing. Ski shop downstairs is helpful, but very expensive. It's a short but icy walk to the closest bus stop for the lifts, or the closest lift. If I had one improvement request it would be to run the hotel taxi/shuttle during the day to the ski lifts.

Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast spread was very nice, with all the usuals.

The hotel of course is only part of the building. Downstairs is the restaurant, club and cinema. You could never leave the building if you didn't want to!

Room Tip: Cube room 203 overlooking the spa. Nice balcony.

“excellent get-away”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

we looked for a nice boutique hotel in zermatt for a 5 nights stay. after a long search and several telephone calls we were able to book a double deluxe hotel room at the backstage hotel.

upon arrival in zermatt by train we were picked up by the hotel and were offered a welcome drink while they prepared our room.

the staff was young and very friendly and always tried to make sure that we feel comfortable at their hotel. they took care of restaurant reservations and skiing passes and we even got a discount at the ski rental place which is located directly beneath the hotel.

the hotel is very nicely decorated which is designed by the local designer and owner heinz julen. the rooms are decorated with his creation which can also be bought at the vernissage shop below the rooms.

the building also owns a modern 3d cinema and hotel guests receive a discount for the movie tickets.

last but not least the hotels owns a very interesting spa containing 7 different cubes offering different spa elements such as steam saune, sauna or a whirlpool al related to the genesis story.

overall, we had a wonderful stay at this hotel and would recommend it to anyone who is looking to stay in zermatt and have a wonderful and relaxing time.

“Impressive stay”

I love hotels like the Backstage for a bunch of reasons. First off, I prefer smaller hotels. They generally offer better comfort and service. A smaller hotel can also offer an interesting story and a well-defined personality.

The owner of Backstage, Heinz Julen, is also its designer and decorator and from what I have read about him, he's well-known throughout Switzerland for unique design concepts. In my book, he's hotel creativity personified.

Julen's wild, yet mostly liberating ideas for interior solutions are everywhere. They are functional, pleasantly offbeat and often quite humorous. In that order.

Unfortunately, I only stayed for a night and didn't have time to experience the elaborate spa or the concert venue Vernissage. Still, I did get to enjoy a gorgeous, sizable room with super comfortable beds and a beautifully presented and scrumptious breakfast buffet.

The Backstage Hotel impressed me and made enjoying the majestic Zermatt even easier.

“Fantastic service, great location and design”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

Perfect ski vacation spot. Situated right in the center of town, close to train station and slopes. Migros supermarket is right next door. Staff is extremely helpful and accommodating. Beautiful design: cutting edge, contemporary, functional. Every detail int his hotel is well thought through. Spa is amazing: great concept, design and facilities. Great bar and movie theatre in the same building as well as ski rental place. Fantastic place all around.

“Unique hotel with terrific staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

I stayed three nights in this hotel in one of the cube rooms. What a special room this was with the bed on top of the bathroom and the alternate color lights! The staff could not be better, some of the friendliest and welcoming hotel staff I've ever encountered. Their friendliness was genuine and not the usual forced politeness of hotel staff. The spa of course is a great and a very special end to your day spent hiking etc. 7 different rooms for all the senses. Breakfast was excellent. Only thing, it said the room had a view of the Matterhorn, but you could only see the tip of the mountain when you stood on your toes in a specific spot in the room. I don't think this specific room is suitable for older people or small kids (for example, the bath is very high and if you have short legs may be difficult to get out) Something small but special I will remember is the way the staff arranged my sleep wear on the bed... really cute! And they tried to accommodate us every time we asked for something. We also asked to see examples of the other rooms on the Monday morning we left and they were happy to give us a tour. Then they offered to take us to the train station in an electric car although it was really close to the hotel. Maybe our experience is not the usual one or when it is really busy but I've never experienced such friendliness in any other hotel. It's as if each of their staff is genuinely enjoying their job and does it with creativity and enthusiasm. They also recommended a great restaurant to us.

Room Tip: The cube rooms are great for romantic couples (although there is space for kids in the one we had...
