“Great Views, Good Staff, Decent Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2008

We stayed one night at the Park Hotel close to Lugano while driving toward Italy. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy this gorgeous lake. We had a rather cozy corner room on the 3rd floor with a balcony overlooking Lugano and the “fjord” toward the east . The bathroom was a decent size and had a great view. The lift, which can carry two people, is small and they’re very serious about not overloading it. Lugano was hot and humid; the hotel doesn't have air conditioning. Since we had a fan in the car just for this possibility, it wasn't too bad for sleeping. Getting there is easy; the signage is good. The end of the road and driveway are narrow. Parking is tight, but free. We didn’t use the pool though it looked great. Dinner was set in the garden area and though a bit expensive, it was delicious. The walk down to the lake side isn’t far and the view (did I mention the view?), is truly superb. The staff was friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome. I think it's a nice hotel for a few days.

“Lovely staff but overall a disappointment”

We spent a night here recently with our two children in between two rentals on Lake Como. I cannot speak highly enough of the lovely staff at this hotel, who are very helpful and caring , so I am sorry to have to say that despite the welcome we found our stay here a bit of a let down. Whilst it is true that the location and views are terrific, the standard of the hotel interior wasn't great for the price. We had two tiny adjoining rooms last decorated in the 60s or 70s. Pity they didn't do the rooms at the same time as the bathrooms, which were nice. The smaller room was really only big enough for one single bed so with two in it it was really hard to move around and you had to go through this room to the double - it was claustrophobic - and irritating that the TV was in the kids' room. The pool is a real plus - very clean, sunny and a good size, but the pool area, like some of the other areas seemed a bit sad and neglected. No pool towels provided in rooms or by the pool, and the ancient looking loungers had no cushions so were unuseable. Elsewhere piles of broken and disused equipment were stored on terraces in guests' view. We were really lucky that it was a nice evening so we could eat outside as the dining room was dim and old fashioned. The set menu costs 39 Swiss francs and the food was OK, nothing special. The breakfast on the other hand was very good with a huge choice of foods including lots of lovely breads and rolls. Overall we felt the place had seen better days and could do with a bit of investment and attention to detail. I know this is Switzerland but the bill was a lot for what we'd had and I'm afraid I wouldn't recommend a friend to stay here.

“Sorry to Leave”

We stayed 3 nights at this wonderful family run hotel that proved to be as great as we hoped. Our extremely CLEAN room with a large balcony on the third floor overlooked the lake and the town. The second night we were treated to a 30-45 minute fireworks show put on by SWATCH watch. It was awesome to sit on our balcony and enjoy the fireworks and the reflections on the lake. The hotel is a excellent base for touring, sight seeing, hiking or just relaxing; with a resturant that is quite good and is manned by a very accomodating staff, good local wine and you are never rushed.
As it was late May early June, our visit had cool and very pleasant weather but there is NO AC so be aware of the Forecast before arriving. A return engagement for a longer period is in our plans.

“Great view, quite a hike”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 July 2006

As many have noted, this is a charming hotel. We stayed there June 21 and 22. The hotel is 250 meters from the main street, and it's quite steep, but not impossible to walk. We were traveling with our extended family, 15 persons and 7-rooms. We had a motorcoach for our Swiss tour. Motorcoaches can't make it to the hotel. The last few switch-backs and the lack of a turn-around point prohibit access. So, the hotel sent a van half-way down the hill to pick-up our luggage and did the reverse two days later when we checked out. Because we were a small group, with a tour bus, we probably should have stayed elsewhere. Having your own car to make it up and down the hill is really the way to go. It was hot in Lugano. In the mid-90F's. No a/c and no fans. Thank goodness for the hotel's swiming pool, because after the 250 meter "stairmaster" hike, we really needed the pool to cool off. The hotel is beautifully decorated with charming antiques. The staff was most attentive. Our room and bathroom was very small, even by European standards, about the size of a cruise ship cabin. Our room, #17, had an excellent view of the lake and a small two-person balcony which was quite nice. There is a small elevator/lift. Breakfast was very good. We ate our lunches and dinners in Lugano. I'd only stay there again if we were traveling by car.
