“nice and family friendly hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 February 2011

The rooms were very nice with great lake view but they were cold!!!Some stuff were excellent, very friendly and kind and some of them completly opposite!Breakfast was very poor for the proce we were paying, but the breakfast room was fantastic!I've lost my scarf from the bar and my sunglasses from our room, and they didnt even ckecked if they could find them somewhere! The bar when we could smoke and drink at night was fantastic and there were games that we could play! The hotel spa was very nice and free of charge!!!!The tranfer from hotel to the train station was very expensive! We have both good and bad feelings about this hotel.

“Arrogant staff, but otherwise nice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

The building is old, but in a good way. You can feel the history of the place and the interiors create a nice, warm feeling. The view to the lake was indeed superb! The sinks were in the bedroom and not in the (small) bathroom, which was a bit weird, though. The restaurant was spacious, perhaps even a bit too big, because it seemed to be empty most of the time. There was a computer with free internet connection in the lobby and free wireless internet was also available. In the basement there was nice spa.

So far all good. But the thing that was not ok was the attitude of some of the personnel. From the start we felt that we are not welcome. The receptionist did not believe that the spa was included in the room price, before I told that I have the confirmation where it is written. Nobody smiled and I got a feeling, that they have something more important to do than talk to a young couple who is staying just three nights (most of the guests seemed to consist of pensioners). In the restaurant there was an arrogant headwaiter who was mumbling all the time something in Italian(?), even though he must have noticed that we don't understand...

The staff creates a major part of athmosphere in any hotel, so unfortunately Soldanella is losing much of its great potential due to some arrogant staff. If I ever visit St Moritz again, I'm going to try another hotel...

“great view from the room but the interaction with the hotel staff added 'stress' to the whole experience...........”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2010

Hotel Soldanella is an old property . but the room in which we stayed ( superior room) had a great view. though the room is small but the view compensated for the same. as far as the amenities are concerned, it not so great. in the night there are mosquitoes around so one can not keep the windows open....
but then to have this nice view you have to bare with the inhospitable hotel staff. i was standing at the reception for more than 5 minutes just to get the receptionist attention though the reception area is very small & i was was the only one who was standing in front of her as a new entrant to the hotel.
the whole check in conversation gave the feeling that the hotel management is doing a great favor on us by allotting a room in their property. we had done an online booking & keeping the booking confirmation no. handy helped us to save from further humiliation.......
as far as the food is concerned, most of the hotel residents eat out side the hotel as it offers lot of choices & it is much cheaper...plus the staff at the restaurants was equally bad.....so after experiencing their hospitality during breakfast time we deiced to eat out & there are plenty of options at the walkable distance.....

“comfortable hotel but avoid the restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2009

The Soldanella hotel is conveniently located near the town centre and a ten minute walk from the railway station.
The recetionist was polite and willingly changed our designated room for one with a view over the lake & mountains.
The bedroom was functional and adequate but had rather dated furniture & decor.

We had a pre dinner drink in the bar served by a friendly and knowlegable waiter. We then took the partly full bottle of wine into the nearby restaurant to be met at the door by a maitre d'hotel dressed out in dinner jacket and bow tie.He looked disapprovingly at the bottle and demanded to know (2X) if we had made a reservation....rather a joke because not one person was sitting in the restaurant at the time.Later when we left after dinner it was still less than half full. He is best described as officious & unfriendly and no asset to this hotel.Eventually mumbling away to himself he directed us to a table.

The table d'hotel menu had only two choices of main course which were served plated. The service was on the slow side and the food quality was passible.
Nearly all the diners were on vacation and wearing short sleeved shirts, some shorts and not a single neck tie in sight. This made the overdressed maitre d' look a somewhat comical spectacle!
The sole waiter on duty was a very friendly and hard working older man.

“An average hotel with a spectacular view”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2009

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night at the beginning of February. We paid 360CHF and compared to some of the other hotels i looked at, that seemed to be a bargain!
The room itself had a great view of the lake, but it was quite "worn" looking. It really needs a renovation. Everything appeared clean, but i agree with a previous reviewer that it smelled of smoke (despite being a non-smoking hotel). It was a fairly large size though.
The breakfast was great. A nice selection of cheese, meat, cereals, yogourt, breads, etc. And you get that stellar view from the dining area too. My husband surfed the net while we ate (free wireless!), while the man next to us "Skyped" his friend back home.
The location was ok - we didn't ski but did take the funicular up the mountain - that would have been a bit of a hike in your ski boots with all your gear. There are certainly other places closer to the funicular, but i'm not sure if they get the same view.
The staff were friendly enough and answered our questions. Free parking too.
Overall, an average hotel in St. Moritz. I'd probably look for something a little better next time.
