“Glorious summer idyll”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

St Moritz over the Christmas Holidays has long been a meeting ground of the super rich. This is where the twin concepts of tasteful vulgarity and understated ostentation were first developed. If one happens to be hit by a car on the crowded streets of thew village one at least has the consolation of knowing that one has been run over by a Lamborghini. The prices at the leading hotels have risen into the stratosphere (the glitterati tend to stay mostly at the Palace). Sour apples perhaps, but it's not for me. However, in the low season (the second half of January in winter and June and September in summer) it's still possible to get some impression of what St Moritz was originally about, namely spending a quiet few days in the midst of a truly stunningly beautiful mountainous countryside while enjoying all the creature comforts. My favourite hotel by far is the Suvretta House. One of the five five star establishments that the village can boast of, it's located well outside of town, surrounded by woods. While the outside has not shaken off the assertive monumentality of pre World War I hotel architecture, on the inside everything reflects luxury and good taste, two qualities that are not always conjoined. Everything conducive to an extended stay is provided, there is a huge indoor pool, a spa, tennis courts, the ski slopes are but a short walk fom the front door, there are well maintained hiking paths leading in all directions. My favorite is the one leading down to the lake in the village and then, through the woods to Pontresina, whence one returns by train, altogether a half day's trek. More serious climbing is also available several twelve thousand foot peaks may be ascended with a day's climb. Indoors a small orchestra plays dance music both at the tea hour and in the evenings. The food in the restaurant is at the high end of grand hotel cookery, somewhere between one and two star Michelin rating. If you're bored here you have only yourself to blame. The downside is that, even in low season half pension (breakfast and dinner) in a decently sized room will cost you around 1,200 Swiss Francs a day for a couple. If this lies within your means (they lost me some time ago) this is one of the most pleasant means of spending a week or two that I can think of.

“Best Hotel Ever”

We recently returned from our honeymoon in Italy and Switzerland. Our stay at The Suvretta House was the absolute highlight of our trip. I cannot recommend the hotel highly enough.
To begin, we received a warm personal welcome both from the staff and the directors of the hotel. Our room was impeccably clean and beautiful, with an amazing view of the mountains and lakes. The amenities were 5 star. It was so peaceful and relaxing.
The indoor pool and outdoor jacuzzi were stunning.
The highlight of the stay were the meals. The best food ever. The most professional presentation as well.
Dinner is fairly formal, and the staff puts on a well-orchestrated show, nightly, preparing and presenting 5-course meals. One night, I wanted something off the menu (Wiener Schnitzel with noodles), and the chef whipped it right up for me.
The lounge named Anton's Bar had a wonderful duet playing, and we enjoyed cocktails and dancing before dinner.
Breakfast is another spectacular show at the Suvretta House. The buffet spread is breathtaking, both visually and taste-wise. They also cooked me fried eggs, apart from the buffet.
On Wednesday, the Hotel Directors hosted a "picnic" near Pontresina, open to all hotel guests at no additional cost. This was the most fabulous picnic I have ever been to, next to this incredible mountain stream, that we reached after a bus ride and a short hike. They served beef, lamb, risotto cooked in a cauldron, salads cheeses, desserts, etc etc, all served with wine. It was absolutely amazing.
My new bride and I love this hotel, and our only regret was that we could not stay longer.
I gave the hotel 5 stars for "value", becuase while it is very expensive, it is very well worth it.
Thank you Mr and Mrs Jacob for an amazing vacation!

“Not worth the price”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2011 via mobile

I am an architect and I find this hotel rather clumsy in architecture both inside and outside. The rooms are average, not luxurious. The staff is pompous and snobby, it reminds me of the people in Paris. The service is average. The food is minuscule. I was always hungry since the portions were so small. I guess they put you on an imposed diet. The only thing I really liked was the amazing vistas of the grounds.

“Snooty hotel in the suburbs of St. Moritz”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 March 2011 via mobile

Snooty hotel with too many rules:
- dark suit after 7 pm (and not brown suit, only black and dark blue accepted
- no dogs allowed in Stube restaurant

Possibly OK if you have children aged 3-9 - as near small ski slope.

“disappointing”

Subject: :Servce

Service not up to 5/6 star hotel standards..
Having stayed at Suvretta House in St Moritz Switzerland numerous times over the last 20 years, in the winter and some summers for at least 2 weeks at a time I was shocked at the treatment my husband and I received last winter during our stay.

We usually stay in the same room during our stay, this time it was renovated before we arrived.

We arrived late in the day and opened the windows as the room was hot. We closed them some time during the night as the room had cooled off and fell back to sleep. Around 2AM the fumes from the paint, varnish, carpet were so strong that i could not sleep so i spent the rest on the night in the bathroom and slept on the marble floor, which was very uncomfortable.

In the morning I advised the managing direct of the problem his reply was "this is not my department, talk to my wife". I then went to the front desk and told them what a terrible night we had.

They reluctantly said they could change our room, but not to the same category we were in. They preceded to show us 3 rooms.
the first would cost us more, the 2nd was totally unacceptable and the third on was acceptable, but was had noview.

I had a feeling that we were not the first to complain about the fumes.
When we asked for compensation for our inconvenience we were told that we should have called down to the front desk in the middle of the night and they would have moved us then, so no compensation was due to us.

At check- in there is always fresh fruit and a bottle of water in each room. When the hotel staff reluctantly helped us move our things they moved 1/2 bottle of water and the fruit remaining on the palter, they did not even give us a fresh bottle or fresh fruit. We stayed at the hotel for two weeks and never got additional water or fruit. not even an apology for our inconvenience.

We would have expected more from a 6 star hotel which we have frequented for years.
