My husband and I needed a place to stay in Chur for two nights, mainly for convenience prior to our planned excursion on the Bernina Express, which starts in Chur and heads south.
We flew into Zurich and took a train to Chur from the airport with one change at the main Zurich Station. It's about 1 1/2 hour train ride from Zurich and then a fairly easy 10 minute walk with luggage to the hotel from the train station in Chur. The hotel is located in the quaint, and small, old town of Chur.
We arrived at 10:30am and the guest clerk checked us in immediately to our 5th floor (top floor) room. this was a great relief after an overnight flight and train ride. The room had a great view over the roof tops of the town to the Alps and Old Clock tower.
I will concur, if you are a non smoker, you will immediatly notice the cigarettes stench coming from bar area by the front entrance. This tended to get funneled up the stair well. Thankfully the Swiss, like lots of Europe, I believe have banned smoking in most indoor eating areas.
The room was fairly spacious and quiet. There is no mini bar or fridge, maybe they had some avail, we used the window ledge to keep things cool. The bed was (surprisingly) very comfortable. The bath room towels, on the other hand, could sandpaper wood. The bath room was small, and you have to bring your own toiletries. The only thing we ever got was a bar of soap.
For breakfast, Yes they had the eggs cooked to order, which was good. The rest was normal European fair, cereals, yogurt, breads, cheese, cold cuts. Good enough to kick off the day.
The one main fault I have, the front desk staff were not very informed or helpful, in regards to area information. They didn't have to speak english. I can make do with my German, but when I asked about restaurants, stores, tourist info, they had no clue. I found all the local stuff on my own. It seemed like they didn't live in that town, only came to work at the hotel, and didn't get out in the neighborhood.
Chur is a small town, with not much to do. Once you've seen the small old town, there are a few restaurants in the area, a few grocery stores nearby to get picnic/train supplies. We did a day trip to Liechtenstein (easy by train to Sargans, then Liechtenstein Bus from there)
The town and the hotel are an ok stop over place. You may want to check out the Comfort Post Hotel, which is nearby, for comparison.
