Diners smoking in the bar/longe area was the only dampener. Otherwise would recommend highly. Location great. Hotel/staff very good. Might be a bit pricey, but I was with a group.

Very nice room here with lots of carved timber to create a warm atmosphere. Everything you should require is in the room.
Not as close to the Old Town as we hoped, but not too far. We were only here one night, so time was limited.
Check in was easy and reception staff very friendly.
Breakfast was good.

We stayed just one night as a stop before boarding the Glacier Express to Zermatt. We had a larger "attic" room in the adjoining building, with atmospheric beams and dormer windows (watch your head!). Very friendly staff at front desk during our stay. Although pretty, the lack of any reasonable lighting in the room made it difficult to find clothes in the closet, pack, read, etc. We ended up unplugging a floor lamp and moving it around where we needed light. Also, turning on the kettle made all the lights go out - we realized that everything was plugged into the same extension cord. Finally had to move the kettle to the bathroom plug to boil water for tea. There was no coffee in the room. Breakfast room was somewhat crowded and buffet selection limited. Staff at breakfast seemed overworked and not as friendly as the front desk.. We didn't try the restaurant but it looked very nice compared with other restaurants nearby we checked out.

Sofa bed was odd, as it slid out and opened up when you sat on it. Perhaps we were the only ones who ever tried to use it as a sofa for sitting? No fitness room (not unusual in Switzerland but a dissapointment in this price range) and no bellman/doorman available. the hotel is on the edge of the Old Town so easy to walk to the train station one direction and the Old Town the other.

Overall not sure if it's worth the price or the reputation with such basic issues.

We stayed for three nights at the beginning of October with a railway travel group of 26. The meals were lovely. We had two set meals with the group (the hotel coped well with low potassium diet requirements too) which were excellent, and a meal downstairs on our last night. It was busy, but it was jolly good!
I really enjoyed being in our room. All wood, cosy, comfortable, and opposite the church. The bells were no worse than your average grandfather clock, except when they went mad at about quarter to eight in the evening. We didn't bother with the TV, we used the rather expensive wifi, and I loved the recipe book.
It was an excellent base for trips on the railway and for exploring the old town. We are already planning a return.
