We, two couples in our late 50s, all experienced travellers in many countries around the world, have just returned from two fantastic nights in Arosa, staying at the Arve-Central.
On the train to Arosa we rang the hotel to inform them of our arrival time. They said they would have somebody there at the station to pick us up and take us to the hotel.
This was a nice touch and a sign of things to come.
Considering the moderate price we paid, the hotel was way above average, in every way.
The same may be said of all the staff.
Rooms are clean and spacious and the dining facilities excellent.
There is a good range of superb food on the menu, all at very reasonable prices.
Location-wise, the Arve-Central is pretty much perfect, just a block or so from the main street.
Arve's manager, Roman, is an Australian who is as equally fluent in German as he is in English. From the moment we met him (he was the one who collected us at the station) he made us feel very welcome and comfortable. It was obvious that he wanted to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.
We had barely arrived when Roman offered us a guided tour of the hotel, which we willingly accepted.
We were shown through the kitchens (immaculate) and the very impressive wine cellars (whose shelves contain a very large collection of wines from all over the world).
During this tour we passed by numerous staff and all seemed busy and happy; Roman's easy rapport with them was nice to see.
After the tour Roman asked if we would like to partake of some wine tasting. Again, we accepted with pleasure.
It soon became obvious that Roman -who, by the way, has extensive experience in many facets of the hospitality industry- is a wine buff and his passion for (and knowledge of) fine wines was something to behold.
Roman's wife Regina works at -and close by- the reception desk. She too has considerable hotel experience and she too was most helpful, friendly and smiling whenever we had a question.
Regina and Roman (parents of two little boys) show an enthusiasm for, and obvious enjoyment of their work in the hotel industry -this is very apparent in their interactions with all guests- and the way they run the Arve-Central is an absolute credit to them.
Towards the end of our stay we hired sleds from the Arve-Central and had a wonderful tme in the snow.
This was our first visit to Arosa and we left with only beautiful memories (and amazing photos).
We all agreed we'd be back and there was no question as to where we would stay... the Arve-Central, without doubt.
(We don't make these comments lightly....we have stayed in some of the finest 5-star hotels in the world and can honestly say that, value-for-money, the Arve-Central is right up there with the best we've had).
