“Wonderful historic hotel”

I agree with Scareybob and teflon1956. This is a memorable place, full of folks who have returned over and over again. It has the feeling of being welcomed into someone's grand old home. I was there during the week of the DHO ski club McMillan Cup Race and it was like being part of extended family. The location is good for ski in/ski out when snow is plentiful, and views are good both up the mountain, down the valley and over the village. The food is fine, and its great to migrate in slippers from the bar to the dining room in the evening without going out. We too enjoyed Chris in the bar, and the pianist. The public areas are comfortable and plentiful. You feel drawn to be downstairs rather than up in your room. Wi fi can be uneven at times but works well enough. I loved staying here.

“Great tradition and service!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Our second stay at the Falken. This is a lovely, old hotel with great character and tradition. Full of antiques and old photos, with creaky floors and a homely feel. Lots of visitors have been coming for years and appear to be almost 'family'. The hotel is personally run by the Cova family - who have a fine skiing pedigree so are useful for tips and guidance. We had one of the standard, north facing rooms. It was actually quite spacious, with room for a couch / sofa bed as well as our very comfy double bed. Very warm - which was just as well as it got to minus 20 at night! Duvets were actually too warm for me but my wife did not complain! Bathroom was fine - although our friends seemed to have drawn the short straw and had a pretty cramped one. If you want better rooms the south facing balcony ones seem to be the pick, although you will pay more. Breakfast is good - mixture of , juices, fruit, yoghurts, bread, meat & cheeses with do-it-yourself boiled egg. There was scrambled egg as well - although on occasions the logisitics to keep this refilled failed and some people missed it or were kept waiting. Dinners are a set 4 course meal - this seemed to have slipped a bit in standard from our last visit but nevertheless was absolutely fine. Staff cannot do enough to help, and many seem to have ben there for several years which is always a good sign. They are really helpful in times of difficulty - one of the guests suffered a broken leg and they were happy to shuttle him around. We had an early start home and had a great packed breakfast. We were able to ski in - ski out thanks to the snow, and the hotel has a convenient boot / ski room at the rear.
All together -a great holiday and great stay.

Room Tip: See above - the south facing / balcony rooms are best but most expensive. Size can vary so maybe ask...

“ski holiday at hotel falken”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Our room was small with a tiny toilet/shower, (we were told they were expecting a single occupency from our travel company}. However the character of the hotel shone through and we had a marvelllous time. There is a great ambience to the place starting from the owner and her family and staff and especially the clientelle who on the whole are repeat visitors. There is a certain old english eccentricity about the place especially with its ties to the Downhill Only Club. There is a fantastic american pianist who is in residence over the winter and we spent many a memorable night starting with classical pre dinner music to full on rock and jive with people dancing once the rugs were rolled up ! As one of the regulars told me ; ' You've not been to Wengen unless you've stayed in the Falken". I know we will go back , but to a bigger room!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a bath as they tend to be bigger

“Not nearly as good as our last stay in 2011 and very disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Having had a really great time here in 2011 we decided to come back and bring friends with us.

Last year we had Room 25 on the corner which was spacious and something we really appreciated. This time we were in Room 24 which was probably one of the smallest rooms in the hotel. You had to plan walking around and it was tiny and cramped and frankly awful and in need of a refurb.

The shower/wc was really compact and we didn't appreciate the wash basin in the main bedroom area. The old wooden furniture was very poor and should have gone on a bonfire years ago. One chest of drawers which didn't open/shut properly, a wardrobe again where you couldn't open the doors properly without moving the other furniture and one wooden chair.

As the hotel was packed when we arrived with a large party of school children and lots of other groups it made no sense complaining to try and get an alternative room. We were on the 2nd floor and our friends (I booked the whole party of us) were in the 4th floor in an attic room with low ceilings. Not ideal for someone over 6'2"!

Also this year we noticed a marked decline in the standard of food in the evening which was pretty mediocre to say the least. Mushroom soup 3 nights in a row was somewhat repetitive and the main courses were way below par. Last year the food had been very much better and I commented on it so. This year it was embarassingly poor having told our friends how good it was and we saw one couple actually eat out!

The staff however as always were very friendly and helpful and the hotel still retains it's charm and character. The service was excellent and cannot be faulted.

The location is brilliant and all the other comments from my previous review apply.

Thankfully we had brilliant snow conditions with nearly 20cm of powder coming down during the week.

Summarising what let it down for us was a really poor room and a drop in the quality of the food.

“A great place for a restful holiday.”

We've been staying at the Hotel Falken for many years, and continue to return. This family-run hotel takes obvious pride in its distinction as a "historic" hotel. As such, the floors are a bit creaky, and the rooms are not luxuriously large. But what this 100 year old hotel lacks in modern amenity, it more than makes up for with its charm, relaxed atmosphere, and old-style service. The Falken is a great place for a restful holiday.

Skiers will appreciate the location of this hotel, right on the ski run. You can easily ski in and out, which is not true of most hotels in Wengen. They have a very nice ski room, with boot heaters.

Room Tip: Both sides of hotel offer a lovely view, south rooms face the Jungfrau and north rooms face the vill...
