“Superb food, highly attentive proprietor”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2010

"The customer is king" at this small, family-run hotel. Guests are treated like royalty: from the courteous reception, to the clean, comfortable rooms, to the exquisite restaurant. I've stayed here twice, and have been impressed with the warmth and attentiveness of the owners and staff. Hotel is centrally located in Gstaad-- a downside being that street-facing rooms may be a bit loud during day and evening. Those sensitive to street noise should ask for back room, which is quiet. Also, anyone concerned about prices should avoid Gstaad altogether!

“Very comfortable, affordable and well located”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2009

We returned to the Christiania Hotel, having stayed there many years ago. By Swiss standards the Christiana is well priced and delivers a very comfortable room and an expansive breakfast. This is not a grand hotel - it is built in the Swiss Chalet style and furnished accordingly. It is a homely and comfortable establishment that delivers. We looked at other options which were considerably more expensive before settling on the Christiana. We were not disappointed.

Our room, which was large and spacious overlooked the main street of town. During the day it was a little noisy but was quiet at night. It had a balcony where we sat and enjoyed a pre dinner drink and snacks purchased at the supermarket directly opposite the hotel. The bathroom was equally large.

Breakfast in the morning was billed as "continental" but it was the most extensive choice of "continental" plus eggs etc.

We arrived by car and we offered a private space directly in front of the hotel. If you arrived by train it is within 100 metres of the station.

The staff were very friendly and accommodative in meeting our needs and in offering suggestions for daytime excursions.

“No request denied. Great food, location & service”

We like to travel by rail. Arriving in Geneva airport from Newark, USA, one can be on the train within an hour for a scenic ride lasting about 2:45 with one change in Montreux. At the airport, we checked our luggage to Gstaad which the hotel staff delivered to our room later.

We arrived via the Goldenpass train at Gstaad station about noon and despite the offer to by picked up, we walked all of two minutes to the Christiania.

Mr. Geadah welcomed and invited us to have a drink & lunch before checking in. Over our entire stay, the room staff was invisible and reception seemed to anticipate our needs in advance.

We stayed here a couple years ago and was surprised to see our room was now larger as they took down a wall & combined rooms. The new bath with a glass divider was modern but the room had the charm of natural wood. This was a top double room, not a suite. The room rates on their website seem complicated but they break down by date (season) then type & location. For a Swiss hotel, with the crappy USA exchange, the rates seem reasonable to me.

This visit we tried the Egyptian/mid-east menu starting with a wonderful appetizer plate then a lamb entree and for my wife, trout off the 'regular menu'.

The next night, we had out favorite fondue - seafood of all types we cooked in broth then ate with like 15 types of homemade sauces. Breakfast in your room or downstairs was good and included anything we requested at no charge.

The hotel is not fast food or fast service. They don't have a pool or excercise facility. What they have is a "home away from home" with location central to Gstaad, the Swiss Alps and a better part of Switzerland.

  • Liked — Not a group/tour hotel.
  • Disliked — Turndowns but no chocolate on the pillow.

“Attentive, family service at its best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2006

Stayed here for many Christmases/New Years (13 years I think?). Still dine there regularly. Mr. Geadah-Nopper is the third generation and superb. Great family hotel in the middle of town. They'll do anything for you (they arranged my marriage!). Try to get a room in the front of the hotel now the high street is pedestrianised.
