The Bernerhof in Gstaad was really a wild card that turned out very nicely. It offers a friendly atmosphere, great location and excellent service. We found the rates a bit stiff, however, as it was the last day of the Gstaad tennis week (CHF 70/USD 60 above the normal price). Staff during the daytime were very service minded and spoke excellent English (make sure you ask Tanja in the reception for what to see in the area - you won't be disappointed by her sightseeing tips). The night-portiere did not speak any English so make sure you have your French or German phrase book at hand should you have queries. When the reception managed to give our initial booking to someone else, we were compensated with a night in a much bigger suite. Both these rooms were spacious with nice big balconies overlooking the busy shopping area, the train station and beautiful mountain scenery. The breakfast buffet is rather average and the waiters did not impress us much. However, the same restaurant is a pleasant and convenient choice in the evening, in particular if you fancy the rustic Swiss alp food. Moreover, both small and big children will find the five page dessert menu a treat. Don't forget to burn calories in the small but stylish hotel pool the following morning.
