I can't believe that nobody has ever made a review of this place. So, here goes...
A small group of us stayed in this hotel in September 2007. The hotel is situated in central Gsteig and is easy to find.
The rooms were ok. The overall decor, while clean, was outdated and shabby. Our double room had a mysterious room between the bedroom and the bathroom, and we were unable to identify its purpose... it was about 2 metres square, with a sofa and a light. It could have been a useful dressing room, if its window had had curtains. The bathroom was ok, or would have been if it hadn't immediately run out of hot water, along with every other hotel room in the place. The cable TV had over 400 channels.
The two main staff (presumably husband and wife), operated as some kind of unwitting comedy duo, or even as a good-guy bad-guy routine. The 'wife' would go around talking to people rather abruptly (in German), and the 'husband' would follow along a few steps behind talking to everybody (in French) and clarifying and smoothing everything and making sure that they were all comfortable...
A few of us had ordered pizzas. One woman's pizza arrived about 15 minutes before everyone else's course, and it was burnt to a cinder. The serving staff must have known something was up because they picked it up and took it away the instant it was pointed out, and brought out another better one at the same time as everyone else was served. We just assumed that someone had stuffed up the timings in the kitchen, and that they were just trying it on to see whether the customers would eat the burnt pizza anyway. I had a soup and a steak, and for some reason had food poisoning the next morning.
Breakfast was also an event. It was somewhat parsimonious, with only one tea bag per shared tea pot, and a very limited continental breakfast. During breakfast, the 'wife' growled at people because not everybody had come down to breakfast at the same time, inconveniencing her.
In conclusion, we got the overall feeling that we as guests were an inconvenience to the staff. It's hard to please some people. I would only stay there again if I didn't have to interact with the staff.
