“Nice little place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2008

The first night we stayed here, the room was large and airy. Just a warning, though: There is no privacy for the shower in this room. It's right out in the open for your partner to see you, so just be aware of that ahead of time. The second night we stayed, a few nights later, the room was much smaller and not as welcoming. The shower this time was enclosed in a very small water closet (the sink was separate, out in the sleeping area). The hotel is not in the most convenient location if you are visiting St. Gallen, but it's fairly close. The Zurich airport is about a 50-minute drive in the morning. The best part about the Sporting is the amazing breakfast in the morning: they offer a wide variety of breads, fresh fruits, cheeses, cereals, hot foods (eggs, bacon, sausage), juices, etc. One can really eat for almost the entire day just in the morning! The hotel staff were pleasant and extremely helpful. If I were back in Switzerland, I would definitely stay again. (We liked it so much after the first night we stayed there, we booked it again the night before we flew out of Zurich ...) The internet access is not free, so be prepared to pay for wireless. There is a mini-bar in the hallway that works on the trust system, though it's a little on the expensive side. Below the hotel is a restaurant / bar. I would have given it a five, except the location is really not that great.

“Very friendly and comfortable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 April 2008

My son and I stayed here for one night recently - after getting hopelessly lost finding the hotel (that was us, not the directions or the location!!) we were very pleasantly surprised. The room was very large and clean - only issue was the bathroom. Well, that is, the shower within the main room - there was no separate bathroom, just the toilet - the shower was part of the room itself, which is okay, except when you're a mother travelling with a 15 year old - I had to sit in the toilet or bury my head in the pillow when he was showering / dressing as there wasn't any privacy!!!

We had dinner here and it was great - and breakfast was also well worth having, especially the delicious fruit selection and coffee to die for.

Overall, for 2 star, well worth the stay!

  • Liked — Friendly atmosphere of hotel
  • Disliked — Shower in room!!

“Wonderful Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2007

We stayed in this hotel last weekend and we felt amazed when we saw our bedroom, as it was quite spacious for a two star hotel and very comfortable.

During the night you couldn't hear anything from outside or from other rooms, so the sound isolation was great and we could get 2 nights rest as few hotels can provide even being 4 or 5 stars.

The heating was working perfectly and we hardly felt any chills during the night, despite being less than 0 degrees outside.

The breakfast was delicious with a lot of variety of fruits, cereals and cheese. The owner was always very caring to make sure you had everything and if we wanted more scrambled eggs, coffee, milk, bacon or whatever he provided it quickly. It was really a nice guy!!

They had many touristic information so we were able to collect as many as we wanted to, in order to visit this beautiful town and it's surroundings.

I personally recommend a walk through the old town in Marktgasse until you get to the imponent cathedral and also visit the Stiftsbilbliothek, a 15th century bibliotheque that is an UNESCO's World Heritage Site. Then walk to Gallusplatz nearby to see some local architecture and afterwards go again in the direction of the old town to walk in Spisergasse, Multergasse and Kugelgasse where you will see beautiful buildings with ornamented balconies. And in the middle of it you can make some nice shopping!! If you have some more time you can visit some local museums, that in my opinion if you can skip them it won't be dramatic.

Eventually if you can go and have the chance to go to the nearby Bodensee and make a visit to one or two local towns as they are quite nice. We were in Lindau (Germany) and we really enjoyed it, but there's also Rohrsach in the Swiss side. For longer excursions but still not more than 1 hour way by car go to Schaffhausen to see the old town and it's beautiful castle and also to take a look to the greatest waterfalls in Europe- the Rheinfalls! Another option that won't disappoint is the lovely city of Stein am Rhein with an extraordinary city architecture and with the castle of Hohenklingen in a big hill nearby that should give great views from the regions (that unfortunalely for us was covered in white fog that day)

My only advice is that you should have a car or be ready to catch a public transport as the hotel is 10-15 minutes far from the city center (by car). But for the quality of the hotel it's worthwhile!!

It's a great trip and i encourage you to take it!!

“Lovely hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2007

I booked this hotel for a recent business trip and it was really lovely. The manager was a very helpful man who explained the local public transport system to us. The rooms were nice fitting the traditional stereotype of wood decor, however the bathroom in one of the rooms was quite small. The breakfast was fantastic for us, I am a fussy eater with an odd diet, so the broad range of cereals, fresh fruit and bread were perfect. There was the option for a cooked breakfast, which my partner enjoyed quite a lot. Overall this is a lovely hotel, 5-10 minutes away from the city centre, with a warm and accommodating team of staff. Definitely recommended.

  • Liked — The staff were very friendly.
  • Disliked — Two of the party are disabled and there are no lifts, fortunately neither party member required wheelchair facilities.

“Two star hotel, but worth much more.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2007

Three times I have visited St. Gallen and three times I have stayed at Herr Hörler's two star hotel and enjoyed his hospitality.
He deserves at least another star.
This hotel is situated to the southwest of St. Gallen in a quiet neighbourhood.
You can walk to St. Gallen but it does take a while or you can take a bus.
There is a cosy bar and restaurant and i always enjoy staying at this hotel. In the summer there is lots of space to sit outside.
The rooms are large but the bathroom is rather cramped.
I wouldn't dream of staying at another hotel in St. Gallen.
