This was picked because of the favourable reviews about the new additions to the hotel, which comprised very clean, modern rooms facing the lake. The rooms in this new section are excellent, simply furnished in an open room with open-plan bathroom. The wall facing the lake is full width and depth glass with a large sliding window and an electrically-extendable awning. Issues with mosquitoes - mentioned by some Tripadvisor contributors - weren’t experienced but I’d believe would certainly exist. The hotel will plug in an anti-bug device at your request, but it’s advisable to keep the windows closed. It was fine for us - we were there in autumn - but that could be a problem during summer because the rooms don’t appear to be airconditioned. People writing in Tripadvisor are correct - the rooms collect a view to die for. They face the lake and mountains that - dependent on the time of day and season - range from mist-soaked and brooding silhouettes to a series of bright green hills that reflect in the glassy lake. The hotel is multi-level and for those in the new section, there is a series of stairs to rise to the same level as the main hotel. There is a lift or two for those who don’t like stairs. The hotel has two restaurants - the one we tried was very, very good though you have to get used to the very high price of food in Switzerland - and so was the bar area that also sits against the window to the lake. The hotel restaurant was better than a place we tried later in the town, so hotel restaurants can be excellent options. The extras served with the meal and the happy staff plus the excellent food made it a winner. There is parking alongside the hotel but isn’t exactly secure. That said, crime appears to be under control in the country and Lucerne is no exception. With Swiss precision the bus will arrive and depart on schedule at the stop directly outside the hotel. Tickets are available from the hotel though the tourist bureau in the rain station will sell a one or two-day transit pass that includes the train, boat (which is a wonderful cruise) and cable car to the nearby Mount Pilatus. After coming from Italy, Switzerland shocks with its cleanliness, efficiency, politeness, respect and high prices. Lucerne has heaps of things to do - walking tours are favoured as is shopping, visiting nearby mountains and villages, riding the trains and cruise boats, and so on. Highly recommended and though the room price is reasonable, be aware that the prices of everything else are quite steep.
