“Nice Hotel with Nice Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

The hotel room was nice with window opening towards rotair chairlift. Basic brakfast and they charged the child (3 years) breakfast as extra who just took one bread piece :). The attendent were not available at night so my internet voucher was wasted as I was unable to get the adapter for my laptop for the night. Rest it was good 1 night stay.

“Peaceful, charming hotel great access to skiing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

My partner and I visited this peaceful family run hotel for 4 days skiing, We got an excellent last minute deal which included half board and lift passes, We received a very warm welcome and because we were too early for the room we were given a place to change and store our bags whilst we went out skiing. Both breakfast and dinner were good quality and service was very friendly. The hotel is located just across a bridge from the main lift so was a five (ish) minute walk in ski boots. All in all a super little place to spend a few days.

“Mountains again!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 July 2011

We regularly visit Switzerland for the flowers and the mountains, and this was our third visit to the Hotel Cathrin. We can only agree with most of the reviews that it is a spotlessly clean family run hotel, and as Switzerland goes, very reasonably priced!

The hotel (10 mins from town centre) is very close to the Titlis cablecar system and within five minutes you can be on your way up the first part of the mountain. There is now a new free bus service in the town, linking all three cablecars, and for walkers this is superb.

Yes, the bedrooms are small, but we had two very comfy large twin beds pushed together, a table, chair and stool, and it is lovely and quiet at night! Bathrooms are very small (approx. 1.5m square) but shower quite roomy and water always good and hot. We had a nice balcony looking towards the Titlis. Our friend was given an room next to us, and although this was a double (yes, it was difficult to open the french windows to the balcony as the bed gets in the way) she was able to get single use at a special rate from the hotel.

Evening mealtimes are fixed and comparatively early, but if you have been walking all day you are usually ready to eat their four-course meals by 6.30/7.00 pm. I am vegetarian and had reminded the owners, but apart from an omelette the first night I got a good selection of interesting dishes with the same vegetables as the others.

The owner Andre - also the chef - is a bit reserved, but he always came and asked whether everything was alright, and his lovely wife is very cheery and helpful. I agree Nadia the receptionist/waitress etc. (dead ringer for Sue Perkins) is a lovely girl and we had some laughs with her - and she makes a mean Swiss Coffee!

If you want five star luxury this is not the hotel for you, but if you want clean and comfy beds in an ideal setting then try the Cathrin.

“Very good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2011

Stayed here 8 days in February. The main purpose for the trip was to go skiing with friends. And in relation to our purpose the location of the hotel is perfect as it takes just a couple of minutes to walk to the gondola that brings you up to the skiing area @ 1800 meters above sea level and all the way up to Mt.Titlis @ 3000 meters +.

My room was clean and I have no seroius complaints about anything actually. However it was very hot in the room even though I turned down the heat as much as possible. But no big problem; just slept with the window opened and since it was usually between 10 and 15 minus degrees outside I slept well there.

The service was quite good, but the owner/manager could be a little bit "on the edge" especially if he was stressed. But who can blame them. It is a family business and he and his wife work plenty of hours each day, seven days a week.

There was another girl working in the reception each afternoon/evening and she gave us very good service and served us very good "jeager the" and "Gluhwein" when we arrived back from the slopes.

Breakfast was as you will expect it to be with a variety of things to eat. But don't expect a breakfast as you get in big hotels with all kinds of warm meals. You get a boiled egg (or two or three if you want) but that's about it.

They also offered a three course meal each evening, but we didn't try that as we wanted to try different restaurants in the city instead.

conclusion: well worth the money, none particular serious issues to complain about.

“Nice friendly hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

Looking for a nice hotel, then stay at the hotel Cathrin. We stayed here for 10 nights, 7 nights half board and 3 nights room only. The breakfast was a cold buffet, with hard boiled eggs being the only hot food. The four course dinner offered something different every night and was of a very high quality. On the odd occasion that there was something we did not like then an alternative was offered without any fuss or bother. The rooms are small but very clean. The owner and staff are very nice and helpful.

The hotel is about 10minutes from the train station and a short walk to the Titlis cable car station. I would recommend purchasing any cable car ticket at the hotel as this avoids the long wait at the cable car stations. Engleberg is a very pretty village with a lot of nice walks.

There are a few good restaurants. I would recommend Chuchichastli, for traditional Swiss food. The food and service here is great. Also for Swiss food you can try the restaurant Ende-der-welt which is a lovely walk out of town. For Italian food try Aubergine Trattoria. Also slightly out of town heading towards Schwand there is a lovely restaurant called Bergrestaurant, here you have the additional benefit of some lovely views.

Overall a lovely village, and a wonderful hotel.
