We regularly visit Switzerland for the flowers and the mountains, and this was our third visit to the Hotel Cathrin. We can only agree with most of the reviews that it is a spotlessly clean family run hotel, and as Switzerland goes, very reasonably priced!
The hotel (10 mins from town centre) is very close to the Titlis cablecar system and within five minutes you can be on your way up the first part of the mountain. There is now a new free bus service in the town, linking all three cablecars, and for walkers this is superb.
Yes, the bedrooms are small, but we had two very comfy large twin beds pushed together, a table, chair and stool, and it is lovely and quiet at night! Bathrooms are very small (approx. 1.5m square) but shower quite roomy and water always good and hot. We had a nice balcony looking towards the Titlis. Our friend was given an room next to us, and although this was a double (yes, it was difficult to open the french windows to the balcony as the bed gets in the way) she was able to get single use at a special rate from the hotel.
Evening mealtimes are fixed and comparatively early, but if you have been walking all day you are usually ready to eat their four-course meals by 6.30/7.00 pm. I am vegetarian and had reminded the owners, but apart from an omelette the first night I got a good selection of interesting dishes with the same vegetables as the others.
The owner Andre - also the chef - is a bit reserved, but he always came and asked whether everything was alright, and his lovely wife is very cheery and helpful. I agree Nadia the receptionist/waitress etc. (dead ringer for Sue Perkins) is a lovely girl and we had some laughs with her - and she makes a mean Swiss Coffee!
If you want five star luxury this is not the hotel for you, but if you want clean and comfy beds in an ideal setting then try the Cathrin.
