Manotel Edelweiss is a very nice hotel. I agree with others that it's not in the most stunning of areas, yet it is in the most convenient location to get around. This hotel was superbly clean, offered free-internet, and had helpful staff in addition to spacious and tidy rooms with plenty of closet space and comfortable beds. Our room faced the courtyard so it was very quiet and within a 5-minute walk to the lake. The hotel included transportation vouchers for us to use on their ferries to get around the lake - unexpected and very useful. Breakfast was your typical continental european spread - always fresh and plentiful. The coffee was quite lovely.
Just a little tidbit on the fondue - if you do not like a pungent smell of cheese, just be lightly forewarned that because of the adjacent restaurant, from mid-morning through the remainder of the day, this smell is quite strong in the hotel. It never seeped into our room however, we were on the 3rd floor, but again, just a light note on that. Get a higher room if you can just to be safe. I don't wish to be picky, but I don't think I could have stayed here otherwise, if the smell had gone into our room.
The restaurant experience is a genuine Swiss show and they certainly go all out. On our first night they got us in without a reservation which I thought was very nice of them, given that they are packed nightly with guests from all over.
The hotel is within a ten minute walk to the main train station - GREAT for picking up a train to Luzerne or anywhere. You can go right that day without having to make reservations for the journey. There are places to eat around the hotel, and of course the posh Geneva hotels are stunning, on the lake and loaded with comfy, plushy, luxurious restaurants with a view. For the moderate traveler, there are other places within walking distance.
If you're a girly girl and want to feel like Marie Antionette for a moment, go to La Vouivre (out straight from the hotel and go left on the first main street there) - a place filled with antique chairs, tables, chandeliers and candleabras on every table with delectable treats. Loved!
The old town of Geneva is just lovely, so quaint. Again, a light note that on Sunday's the entire town is closed so quite hard to find something to eat, or anywhere to shop. However, if you're a photographer, it is a great day to get photos in without the crowds. Go early and you will have the old town to yourself (at least at this time of year).
There is not much to see in Geneva at this time of year (November), so I would advise it as a hop-off place, if you will. Take an excursion to Mont Blanc, catch the train to Luzerne (trains are very clean and lovely, even in second class - though pricey but worth it). You really don't need more than two days in Geneva. I reckon Geneva is more of a summer retreat with the lake affording the water-skiers and perhaps more sunny days to admire the towering Alps.
Another note that to just walk around the lake from this hotel, past center-ville, and to the other side is a lovely romantic walk - day or evening. There are public bathrooms, plenty around the walk around the lake - However - Bring your own toilet paper. Don't mean to be blunt but several of them did not have toilet paper and well.... noone wants to be in that situation if you know what I mean. So just throw a bit in your bag and you'll be fine.
Finally, when asking for a wake-up call, double check. We asked for one on the day of our departure and it never happened - eeeks. They also dropped the ball with arranging a shuttle back to the airport that day. If this happens to you, don't panic - they were able to get one within ten minutes. So take note, there is a shuttle you can take from/to the airport. A cab ride from airport to hotel, for 3 miles, about $60.
Be prepared to swipe the card and don't look, stay carefree, and go with it. I would recommend Manotel Edelweiss to someone looking for a clean good stay without going broke. Everything in Geneva is expensive. And that is an understatement. Enjoy!
