We were not due to be in Bern so had not booked anything. We realised that getting a decent room might be difficult. After checking out a few places we decided that we'd use Belle Epoque. The old gentleman at reception told us the price was 350 SF but he'd give us it for 200 SF (weekend single, special rate, don't tell anyone as they might get upset as they would have paid more) with breakfast and internet included.
The room was OK, slightly dated with shutters and a TV so small that it was difficult to see without binoculors.
The room, bed and bathroom was OK but nowhere near the standards that a 4 star hotel should be presenting.
Breakfast was standard fare, usual European self service buffet.
We couldn't get the Wifi to work, our computer couldn't find the name of the hotel or network. When I approached the receptionist he said it was under Swisscom and it should be easily found. We still couldn't find it and another member of staff told us not to bother with it and hook up with the next door hotels system. Again no joy so we just left it.
Just as we were loading the car with the bags an Italian family was looking for a room and guess what he offered them special rates, weekend etc.etc.
The problems started when checking out. We noticed he'd charged us 200 for the room and added 21 SF each for the breakfasts and 12 SF for the internet. After a short one way heated discussions with him he gave me 42 SF back. I was so angry I forgot about the internet and stormed out of the hotel.
If this never happened I would have walked away thinking that this was overpriced and not a 4 star hotel, after this I now think the same but with an added feeling of being taken as a mug punter.
I will never ever return to this hotel.
