“Great base to explore Basel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2007

This is a nice and basic hotel. However, not sure how the hotel got a 3 star rating. I would say 2 stars by UK standards. However, don't let that put you off. Rooms where clean and the bathroom was OK. The top of the toilet cistern was cracked but that did not affect it's funciton - it was just cosmetic.

Breakfast was a buffet spread of tea, coffee, orange juice, bread rolls, bread, jam, butter, margarine, hams, croissants and cheese. You could help yourself and we went back for lots of coffee even after we finished breakfast and drank it outside (which had plenty of tables and chairs). The bar area itself was very nice - it also served as a dining area.

Getting to the hotel - Get the airport bus no. 50 to the Railway station / Bahnhof SBB. Then go the opposite direction to the bus and walk for 2-3 mins and get the no. 2 tram to Messeplatz. Then walk back in the direction opposite the tram then turn right. This is Riehenring. The hotel is a short walk and we could see the distinctive pink colours a mile off!

Tip - get a free mobility ticket from the reception when you check in for free rides on the trams.

“Tidy Little Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2006

Booked this through easyhotel[--] where you have to pay ahead of time but had no problems there.

Location is on the north side, opposite the old town, though its a few minute ride by tram or 15 minute walk to the main bridge for instance. It's a few blocks from German train station.

Room was small, but perfectly fine for a one person business traveler. I stayed 5 nights during a conference. Hotel was well maintained and clean - friendly staff.

No air conditioning as is the case with most affordable European/Swiss hotels, but they did give a small fan on request - it was actually pretty chilly at night as long as you keep your window open. However, it's on a busy street for cars not people if you are a light sleeper. I am not a light sleeper, had the windows opened and was woken up a couple times, but had no problems going right back to sleep or sleeping in general. Noise woulnd't be a problem with closed windows.

Breakfast included was good, (cheese, ham, croissiants, cereal, coffee, tea) but a little monotonous 4 days in a row.

I'd have no problem staying here again if it fit my budget and where I wanted to be in Basel. It's just 2 blocks on the same road as the Congress Center.

  • Liked — Free internet connection
  • Disliked — Monotonous breakfast
  • Tips/Secrets — Wireless emits from ground lobby so as for a lower floor for best reception.
