“Affordable option”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2010

Located close to the new cultural center, this is an older hotel with small, dark rooms and very expensive amenities (the norm for Switzerland). The staff was helpful and Internet was free and fast, plus given how expensive everything is here it is a good deal but don't expect much. The windows do an okay job of soundproofing but the nearby trams are loud. Within walking distance from the Badischer train station, and there is a COOP grocery store nearby. Free, simple breakfast. Typical 3-star hotel with small windows. Recommended based on the price.

“basic accommadation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2008

The rooms were fairly small but clean, the furniture was tatty and could do with being updated.Breakfast was ok served in a pleasant dining room. The staff were not overly friendly but when we told them that the hair dryer & one of the lights were not working they were soon replaced. Thanks to the review by gwgw Sept 16th 2007 the hotel was very easy to find and it was a good base if ,like us, you want cheap accommodation just to sleep & have breakfast .Basel is a city that is well worth a visit and a good base for travelling to other area's.Colmar in France is well worth a visit ;also ;buy a conbined ticket from the TI which takes you by train-bus & cable car to Reigoldswil which is excellant.Travellers tip: if you have an accommadation confirmation document with you, you can travel free on the airport bus & trams to get to your hotel when checking in ask for a mobility pass which gives you free city transport during your stay & back to the airport.

“Okay location, nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2007

Booked through Octopustravel.com. The hotel was listed as a 3-star, but doesn't quite come off this way. The property is a family-run tourist class hotel located directly across from the Messe Tower and Convention Center area.

The hotel is easy to find, as its a pink building on a relatively short street, about 2 short blocks from the Messeplatz tram stop. . . (This is the Klein Basel [lesse Basel] area of the city, which is about 10 min tram ride away from the SBB station.)

The rooms were somewhat small, but average for a tourist-class hotel. The rooms were simply decorated, but not in the best of condition, with definitive signs of furniture wear, and the need for minor refurbishment. . . The room rate included a cold breakfast buffet of coffee, yoghurt, muesli, charcuterie, cheese, and rolls, which were served by the adjoining restaurant next door.

Overall, the staff were very helpful (although the desk is not a 24-hour desk). There is no WiFi or business center available, which can complicate things, if you need to have access to the web. Normally this is not a major issue, but can become one, as there are relatively few internet access points or cafes in the Klein Basel area.

Considering the dollar rate these days, the Hotel Alexander was an economic choice of stay.

  • Liked — The staff, who were very friendly and helpful.
  • Disliked — Lack of broadband services.

“Good week at the Alexander...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2007

Spent a good week at the Alexander, two minor irritations:
1. Could do with tea/coffee facilities in the bedrooms.
2. Restaurant has good Swiss food, but no choice for those staying half-board, you had to have what you where given.

Staff VERY pleasant, helpful. There was a 'bug' going around the city, a number of guests got it, plus staff, but all service stayed good.

“Great base to explore Basel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2007

This is a nice and basic hotel. However, not sure how the hotel got a 3 star rating. I would say 2 stars by UK standards. However, don't let that put you off. Rooms where clean and the bathroom was OK. The top of the toilet cistern was cracked but that did not affect it's funciton - it was just cosmetic.

Breakfast was a buffet spread of tea, coffee, orange juice, bread rolls, bread, jam, butter, margarine, hams, croissants and cheese. You could help yourself and we went back for lots of coffee even after we finished breakfast and drank it outside (which had plenty of tables and chairs). The bar area itself was very nice - it also served as a dining area.

Getting to the hotel - Get the airport bus no. 50 to the Railway station / Bahnhof SBB. Then go the opposite direction to the bus and walk for 2-3 mins and get the no. 2 tram to Messeplatz. Then walk back in the direction opposite the tram then turn right. This is Riehenring. The hotel is a short walk and we could see the distinctive pink colours a mile off!

Tip - get a free mobility ticket from the reception when you check in for free rides on the trams.
