“It doesn't deserve 3 stars”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2011

We stayed 2 nights at the Alexander which has been awarded 3 stars. Usually in Switzerland 3-star hotels are very reasonable. This one is an old establishment which has been refurbished but with very little soul. The rooms are very austere and the renovation leaves you with pieces of furniture in which you will knock your head or other essential organs. The bathrooms are equipped but they reflect the aged establishment. The renovation did not inject any new spirit into the old hotel. Management gives away free tickets for the public transport system of the city which is a nice gesture. We wouldn't revisit the place once again when in Basel.

“Great Hotel for the price, and really helpful staff!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2010

Yes this hotel is run down, but it is clean and really cheap for Basel. We paid £60 a night through Octopus.
The breakfast is an all you can eat continental (cereal, yougurt, meat, cheese, breads, oj and coffee) and was really nice.
The hotel includes a free ''Basel Mobility'' pass so all your travel on the trams are free! The tram stops really close to the hotel, and if your keen it is only a 15 min walk down a nice main street to the old town.
The only downside would be if you are a light sleeper as there is a nightclub downstairs, which goes till about 4am.
The staff were very helpful with advice on what to see and how to get there!
Overall really good, as expected a lot worse!

“A good Holiday made poor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2010

I simply can't recommend this hotel, we stayed here as part of a larger party with a major coach operator in the NW of England. The room was clean recently refurbished to some extent but still tatty. The bar really was more of a disco and there's nowhere to sit other than in your room and then on hard chair. The food was overcooked and served in the restraunt next door effectively. Now as this was part of a tour the food normally served in the Restraunt may be much better but what they served us was poor in my opinion. Reminded me of School dinners. There are many more hotels near by so I'd look for one of them first. Can't say much about the staff never really saw any.

“Clean, comfortable hotel.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2010

Comfortable hotel. We were looking for a single night stop between Paris and the Valais so the fact this was quite a long way from the centre was not a problem. Using the tram was better than taxi.
The restaurant was good with traditional cuisine.

“Affordable option”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2010

Located close to the new cultural center, this is an older hotel with small, dark rooms and very expensive amenities (the norm for Switzerland). The staff was helpful and Internet was free and fast, plus given how expensive everything is here it is a good deal but don't expect much. The windows do an okay job of soundproofing but the nearby trams are loud. Within walking distance from the Badischer train station, and there is a COOP grocery store nearby. Free, simple breakfast. Typical 3-star hotel with small windows. Recommended based on the price.
