Booked through Octopustravel.com. The hotel was listed as a 3-star, but doesn't quite come off this way. The property is a family-run tourist class hotel located directly across from the Messe Tower and Convention Center area.
The hotel is easy to find, as its a pink building on a relatively short street, about 2 short blocks from the Messeplatz tram stop. . . (This is the Klein Basel [lesse Basel] area of the city, which is about 10 min tram ride away from the SBB station.)
The rooms were somewhat small, but average for a tourist-class hotel. The rooms were simply decorated, but not in the best of condition, with definitive signs of furniture wear, and the need for minor refurbishment. . . The room rate included a cold breakfast buffet of coffee, yoghurt, muesli, charcuterie, cheese, and rolls, which were served by the adjoining restaurant next door.
Overall, the staff were very helpful (although the desk is not a 24-hour desk). There is no WiFi or business center available, which can complicate things, if you need to have access to the web. Normally this is not a major issue, but can become one, as there are relatively few internet access points or cafes in the Klein Basel area.
Considering the dollar rate these days, the Hotel Alexander was an economic choice of stay.
