Room was dirty, bland and cold. Looked more like a youth hostel rather than the four-star hotel that was advertised. Expensive and very disappointing.

Nice hotel on the edge of Basel, with reasonably sized clean rooms, helpful friendly staff. Internet access in rooms. Limited number of parking spaces.

My wife and I booked at Spalentor during our 11 day Switzerland trip in July of 2009. We had not booked the majority of our hotels prior to our arrival in Switzerland because we had flexible travel plans, we chose Spalentor based on Tripadvisor reviews and price. We arrived at the train station in Basel and within a few minutes navigated our way to the correct tram, and a few minutes after that we arrived at the correct stop. The Hotel Spalentor is a short few steps from the tram stop which makes getting around Basel very convenient.

Upon arriving in the Spalentor lobby we were greeted by very nice front desk staff. The check in process took less than 10 minutes including getting our free transportation tickets for public transport in Basel. The staff were also very knowledgable and gave us plenty of insight into Basel and the local surroundings. We were also immediately pleased with the trendy boutique appearance of the lobby and the nice bar area.

Our room was modern, very clean, very spacious and basic with a spacious and clean bathroom as well. The hotel provides robes and slippers for guests to use and there is also a safe in the room. The hotel does not have air conditioning but does provide guests with fans to use, we slept comfortably. I write this in any hotel review because I find it important - I have done numerous trainings on bed bugs and other such critters and as a result am extremely nervous about hotels. After flipping mattresses, moving beds, looking in cracks and crevices, etc I am happy to report that our room at Spalentor was free of any nasty unwanted bugs!! As a matter of fact there wasn't even dust under the bed.

The Hotel does have an adewuate little business center which gave us an opportunity to search for and book a hotel at our next destination.

The only thing to note about this small hotel is that the front desk closes after a certain hour so guests are given a code to access the front door, we came and went without any issue.

For the price, the comfort and the location we would definitely book at the Spalentor again if we found ourselves in Basel.

I loved Hotel Spalentor. My room was quite large by European standards with a large, bright, and clean bathroom. I haven't spent much time traveling in Switzerland, but compared to hotels in Italy, this was a great room for a great deal. The following made my business trip easier: great lighting in the room, relatively fast and free wireless internet, large breakfast selection, close proximity to the University of Basel, and great tram access. I could hear the tram from my room, but like other reviewers have said, I'm sure that you can hear them from every room in Basel, given their abundance. The tram never woke me up at night. The women at the front desk were always pleasant and very helpful. My only complaint would be that there were no outlets near mirrors--and given the fact that it I stayed in the Lady's room, I would have thought that they would appreciate the need for those outlets in that type of room. When I travel for business, I really appreciate the hotels which have some color on the walls and have a little personality...this hotel was perfect for my trip.
