“Very good value in wonderful town”

Our European vacation was primarily of France and London, but we wanted to see a bit of Germany. We decided on Basel as a closer destination, and are glad we tried it.
We stayed in five different three star hotels on our trip, and this one was by far the best. Very spacious, very clean. Furnishings made me feel like I was in an IKEA store. Very nice reception staff. Several nearby restaurants and bars seemed to be closed for vacations, and not much night life nearby, but easier to sleep. The included breakfast was good, and we also ate lunch at the hotel restaurant that was fine.
The Basel tram system is terrific! You get a free pass when you check in at a hotel (have reservation information with you when you arrive at the train station so you can do the first ride to the hotel). Basel is a neat city--history, shopping, culture--not on most people’s list, but do consider it and the Muncherhoff hotel.

“Great budget Hotel”

Stayed for 3 nights in Nov 06. Hotel is well located opposite the conference centre and the German railway ststion (not the Swiss one - be careful). Rooms are spotless but there is no air conditioning but as was it was winter there was no need for it when we went. There was a bit of noise from the street outside so I can imagine that in the summer months you leave the window closed and roast or leave it open and get no sleep.

There is a restaurant on the ground floor with we ate at and had 2 nice meals. Breakfast was the usual continental cheese, ham, fruit etc with rolls. You get a tourist card for the duration of your stay which entitles you to travel on all the buses and trams in the city with enables you to explore.

Basel is great with loads of markets and fairs almost at every square. Loads of restaurants but not many bars where you can just go for a drink or get a quick toastie or something for lunch.

Make the effort to go to the top of the cathedral for a fantastic view and take the tram tour of the city with your tourist card.

Would definately recommend the hotel and the city for a 3/4 day break.

“Lovely hotel”

I have just returned from Basel and whilst there I stayed at the Munchnerhof Swiss Q Hotel, which is located very close to the Exhibiton Centre. I found the staff to be extremely helpful and very pleasant. My friends and I arrived very late at the hotel (11pm) and they offered to re-open the kitchen so we could get some dinner, even though it had closed at 10.30pm.
The room and bathroom were very clean, just as you would expect from the Swiss and the bedroom furniture was new and the room contained everything we needed.
All the staff from the receptionists to waiting staff to the room maids made the stay very enjoyable and were very helpful with regard to places to visit, eat and drink.
At the end of the day though, it is a budget hotel, so please don't be expecting the Ritz, but if you go with realistic expectations you won't be dissapointed. We would definately use this hotel again.

“Definitely not worth the money”

This hotel was a last minute choice we made from the airport, as we had to stay in Basel overnight (7th July) due to a connecting flight early the next day. To be honest, I didn't like this place at all. The actual hotel room was ok, but it was a stinking hot day & there was no air conditioning. The window only opened from the top, so it allowed no breeze in at all. We had to have it opened in the hope of some cooler air coming in during the night. But it didn't & not only that, the room faced the street & it was a Friday night & the pub a couple of doors down obviously stays open 'till the wee hours & we had to put up with listening to people carry on until about 3am. We were lucky if had got 2 hours sleep that night. I also think the hotel is located in a seedy part of the town, as when we walked down the road to get something to eat, we passed 3 sex shops! There is also no fridge in the room, so we had to keep getting ice from reception for our drinks, which they started to get quite annoyed about. I think that around CHF200 per night (for a triple) is way overpriced for this hotel. It was actually the most expensive place we stayed in & almost the worst.

“Freindly well-located budget accomodations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 June 2006

We were looking for budget accomodations in Basel, and this hotel had both an attractive rate and location. It is a block from the convention center, along a row of bars and cafe's across the river about ten blocks from the old section of Basel. It is extremely well served by tramlines, the 6 goes to the center of the city in five minutes (and to the outstanding Foundation Beyeler museum 10 minutes the other way), and the 2 goes to the train station SSB where you catch the airport bus. We received a "Mobility Pass" on check-in that made the tram-rides free.

The hotel is located in a row of sidewalk bars and cafes: there is street noise in the room from the trams and people in the bars, but it dies down by midnight (unless Switzerland wins a World Cup game, then it goes all night!). The bars are convenient and friendly and it's nice to sit out in them and talk near the hotel.

The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable. There is extensive cable TV with English news and entertainment channels, and ethernet internet connections into the room. (The speed is throttled, though, and you get access by buying time at the front desk: 15 CHF for 4 hours of connect time: free access if you use the terminal in the lobby). Local calls were free. The bathroom was moderately sized and the shower had adequate hot water with light pressure. The biggest drawback was the lack of air conditioning: it was really hot and we had to leave the window open all the time.

The hotel offers breakfast for 10 CHF per person: the meal is served from 6 am to 10 am and includes a good selection of cereal, cheeses, meats, and breads, plus soft-boiled eggs, juice, fruit, and yougurt. They bring coffee and tea: it's a good deal since you have to spend 2.50 CHF for coffee on the street and 2.50 CHF more for an apple strudle.

Staff is at the desk 24 hours: they were always there with a smile and a greeting. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly: they gave us an adapter plug for our stay at no charge, let us try the internet before having to pay for it, allowed us to use the ironing facility in the maid's area, and gave very accurate advice about getting around the city.

Overall, this is a good, clean, friendly budget accomodation with excellent transportation connections and a good breakfast. The rooms can be hot and the internet is slow: street noise may be a problem is you are a light sleeper and need to leave the window open.

Temporary Note: The hotel is undergoing extensive renovation in the lobby: the workmen are only there between 8 am and 5 pm, but they are busy throughout the day. This also affects the hotel restaurant this summer. I think that it is going to make the facilities much nicer on the ground floor when they are finished, and it had no impact on our stay.
