We were looking for budget accomodations in Basel, and this hotel had both an attractive rate and location. It is a block from the convention center, along a row of bars and cafe's across the river about ten blocks from the old section of Basel. It is extremely well served by tramlines, the 6 goes to the center of the city in five minutes (and to the outstanding Foundation Beyeler museum 10 minutes the other way), and the 2 goes to the train station SSB where you catch the airport bus. We received a "Mobility Pass" on check-in that made the tram-rides free.
The hotel is located in a row of sidewalk bars and cafes: there is street noise in the room from the trams and people in the bars, but it dies down by midnight (unless Switzerland wins a World Cup game, then it goes all night!). The bars are convenient and friendly and it's nice to sit out in them and talk near the hotel.
The rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable. There is extensive cable TV with English news and entertainment channels, and ethernet internet connections into the room. (The speed is throttled, though, and you get access by buying time at the front desk: 15 CHF for 4 hours of connect time: free access if you use the terminal in the lobby). Local calls were free. The bathroom was moderately sized and the shower had adequate hot water with light pressure. The biggest drawback was the lack of air conditioning: it was really hot and we had to leave the window open all the time.
The hotel offers breakfast for 10 CHF per person: the meal is served from 6 am to 10 am and includes a good selection of cereal, cheeses, meats, and breads, plus soft-boiled eggs, juice, fruit, and yougurt. They bring coffee and tea: it's a good deal since you have to spend 2.50 CHF for coffee on the street and 2.50 CHF more for an apple strudle.
Staff is at the desk 24 hours: they were always there with a smile and a greeting. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly: they gave us an adapter plug for our stay at no charge, let us try the internet before having to pay for it, allowed us to use the ironing facility in the maid's area, and gave very accurate advice about getting around the city.
Overall, this is a good, clean, friendly budget accomodation with excellent transportation connections and a good breakfast. The rooms can be hot and the internet is slow: street noise may be a problem is you are a light sleeper and need to leave the window open.
Temporary Note: The hotel is undergoing extensive renovation in the lobby: the workmen are only there between 8 am and 5 pm, but they are busy throughout the day. This also affects the hotel restaurant this summer. I think that it is going to make the facilities much nicer on the ground floor when they are finished, and it had no impact on our stay.
