“wow!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

Wonderful hotel, in the middle of the city yet still managing to feel separate from the hoi polloi. I go every year and they have even started giving me the same room, unless I specifically ask for a change. I love the fact that there are no tea/coffe making facilities in the room; you pay for 5*, you get 5* and should not have to make your own morning cuppa! The food is superb, it´s incredibly safe and easy as a female travelling alone and I fully intend returning as much as I can.

“Top quality with old traditional Swiss hospitality.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

Number one hotel in Basel, luxury room with all the best material and equipment (B&O TV). Love the conner room with a view of Rhine and city, space wise a bit small for the price.

Restaurant Cheval Blanc is my favourite in Basel, having refine French cuisine and watching Swiss national day fire work on its balcony was a great treat and memorable night in life. The Braserie is also a great place to spend an evening with the love one and family. Both with good quality food and service.

“Excellent hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

Top hotel with great service, and very nice rooms, especially after the extensive refurbishment they have done. Breakfast overlooking the Rhine is a highlight. Rooms are a bit posh though, old style. If you prefer contemporary rooms, this might not be for you.

“Super fancy.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

This is a 5 star hotel, from the friendly and overbearing service to the rooms and bar.
I love a nice room, and the junior suite delivered. No complaints there. It was furnished with everything you would want. There was a great view of the river. However, I don't need the front desk clerk to escort me to my room to explain all of its features. Some guests might like that though.
We enjoyed several beers in the bar. Perhaps I should have ordered a mixed drink, because the bartender "sweat" the bottle for a good 5 minutes trying to get the last few drops into my glass. I was a little frustrated. I just wanted my drink. The bar was lovely with candles and a fire place.
I enjoyed reading about the history of the hotel.
I usually took the stairs to my 4th floor room. I'm not the kind of person that needs an elevator operator to push a button for me.
The breakfast was top quality.
BTW, I got a great deal on orbitz. This hotel is usually beyond my normal price range. It was a great room.

“No tea/coffee”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

This is certainly a beautiful hotel, but let down by a few things. No tea/coffee making facilities in the room. Difficult to get decent 'black' tea in Basel restaurants.. Very expensive city, and no small, inexpensive cafes. The shower in the bath was gorgeous, but a less agile or fit person would have found it precarious getting out of the bath. Nothing to hold on to. Difficult to get the room cool at night, even with the air-con (this in December). Lovely breakfast room overlooking the Rhine, and excellent 'spread' of hot and cold food, although the bacon in the covered, heated tray was a frazzled heap by 10 am, and not refurbished. .
