My husband and I spent three nights at Locanda del Gallo on our recent trip to Italy. What a lovely place! It is very peaceful and serene, with a gorgeous view of the hills and valleys in Umbria. The rooms are well-furnished, the bathrooms are nicely appointed, and everything has a fresh feel to it. This B&B is off the beaten path and we needed the assistance of a local shopkeeper to point us in the right direction once we got to Ponte Pattoli, but it is worth any extra effort. There are a lot of interesting places to visit that are in the vicinity, including Assisi, Gubbio, and Cortona. Or you can relax on the patio or by the pool. The food is excellent, and Jimmy the chef (with his sidekick Giorgio) is fabulous. (Jimmy is very accommodating of special requests. Omelets weren't really on the breakfast menu, but my husband wanted an omelet, and Jimmy prepared him a wonderful omelet!) Breakfast is buffet style out on the glassed-in patio room. Evening meals, also served in the patio room, are offered for an extra 20 euros per person if you arrange in advance, and it is worth every dime. It is gourmet fare. Also, the road to the Locanda is very narrow and twisty, and we did not care to negotiate it in the dark in our rental car, being unfamiliar with the area. Coming back from our day trips, relaxing, and having a wonderful meal while watching the sun go down over the Umbrian hills was icing on the cake for us. Paola and her husband, Irish, were wonderful hosts, and we cannot recommend this place highly enough. Note: This would not be an appropriate selection for anyone who wants to be close to nightlife or the party scene, but that was not an issue for us. If it is for you, this would not be your cup of tea and you should stay elsewhere. Personally, we would go back given the opportunity.
